Musk calls out Lyndsey Graham for crazy high hotel bill on Ukraine trip, Senator fires back
June 4, 2025 | Vivek Saxena

Things are rapidly heating up between Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) founder Elon Musk and congressional Republicans.

On Tuesday afternoon, Musk posted a scathing tweet slamming congressional Republicans over the “Big, Beautiful Bill” that they’re working to pass, calling it a “disgusting abomination.”

Later that afternoon, House Speaker Mike Johnson responded to Musk’s tweet by calling him “terribly wrong.”

“It’s very disappointing, ok. I’ve come to consider Elon a good friend. He’s obviously a very intelligent person, and he’s done a lot of great work,” he told reporters. “With all due respect, my friend Elon is terribly wrong about the one big, beautiful bill.”

According to Politico, Johnson also revealed that he’d spoken with Musk by phone on Monday about the “virtues” of the bill.

“And he seemed to understand that,” the speaker maintained. “But for him to come out and pan the whole bill, to me, is just very disappointing… very, very surprising in light of the conversation I had with him yesterday.”

“It’s not personal. I just deeply regret that he’s made this mistake,” he added.

On Tuesday, Musk also reposted a tweet that accused Sen. Lindsey Graham of having spent $400,000 of taxpayer money on hotel room services while visiting Ukraine:

Graham fired back against the rumor later that afternoon by explaining that the supposed hotel bills that were being used against him as evidence were, in fact, State Department monthly contracts.

“This isn’t a travel expense report,” he wrote. “It’s a monthly contract between the State Department for U.S. diplomats in a war zone — nothing to do with my trip.”

Still raises some uncomfortable questions.

This isn’t related to travel expenses. It’s a standard monthly contract from the State Department for U.S. diplomats working in a war zone. It has no connection to Senator Graham’s trip.

That's right at $5 million a year. Exactly how many diplomats are there in Ukraine, anyway?
