Name Your Favorite Three Authors
« on: May 22, 2025, 04:24:03 am »
I asked mountaineer who her favorite three writers are, waiting to hear back, but I thought it would be a good exercise for all of us.

SO, PLEASE POST YOUR FAVORITE THREE WRITERS.  IF YOU WANT TO LIST MORE THAN THREE, THAT IS WELCOME TOO!

Always looking for new material to read.  I read all genre, but I enjoy fiction, and particularly historical fiction the most.  So, even it they are not your favorite three writers, if you know of historical writers you enjoyed, I would love hearing about them too.

One of my favorite historical writers was Herman Wouk with The Winds of War, and War and Remembrance.  I thought both were excellent.

My list of favorite three writers has but two names.  I could not decide who I would put in the 3rd position.

1.  W.E.B. Griffin  -  read every book he has written.  He writes in series, and I suggest you follow the order of each series.  I loved each one of them.  I started reading The Corps which was recommended to me by a West Point grad/salesman I was dealing with years ago.  His first name on his list was Griffin, and it has become my first name.

Sadly, Griffin passed away a few years ago.

2.  Tom Clancy  -  my roommate from university days gave me Patriot Games as a birthday gift.  I read it, loved it, and subsequently went through all his books published before and every book since.  He wrote many books I thoroughly enjoyed, and about as many have been published in his name since his death in 2013.

3.  I am undecided.  Both writers above, I bought their book the moment it hit the shelf for sale.  Right now, I have one other writer I can make that claim, but I would not say it is my top 3rd choice.  Lee Child, with the Jack Reacher series, again I buy them the moment they hit the shelf.

I also enjoy the Jack Reacher series on one of the streaming services that has had I believe three years produced from his books.

Still looking for that writer to make my #3 writer.  When I was young, and in school, I would have listed Kurt Vonnegut.  I enjoyed reading them when I was young, all his books up to Breakfast of Champions, but I sort of tired of his writing about that time.  But I did enjoy his books back then.  I held from that time Cat's Cradle as one of my favorite books, but I read it again in 2007, some 30+ years after reading it the 1st time, and I was questioning why I held it in such high regard.  So, we do change with time in terms of our choices and beliefs.

I found Clive Cussler to be fun.

Seventeen Techniques for Truth Suppression

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Yes, I agree.  I have enjoyed his books too.  I have only read about 9 of his books so far.

My list is fluid, but I'll give you the three I told jafo (not necessarily in this order):
David Baldacci
Ruth Rendell
Dean Koontz

I don't read anymore due to problems with my eyes..but when I did they were mostly history books

the Civil War..which led to Abe Lincoln which led to Mary Todd Lincoln

My uncle Bob got me interested in WW11 which he had a huge collection of books...I read so many books I lost count....I had to stop because I started having nightmares about concentration camps.

I moved on to Jane Austin....lol

Re history books, I've enjoyed every David McCullough book I've read, e.g., the ones on the Wright Brothers and Johnstown. Very readable. If I stumble upon one I haven't yet read, I'll grab it.

Just one for me, Roger Zelazny. He's best known for his "Nine Princes in Amber" series, and his books "Lord of Light" and "A Night in the Lonesome October", and those are all great. But for me his short fiction was where he shined brightest, including stories like "A Rose for Ecclesiastes", "This Moment of the Storm", "This Mortal Mountain", "For a Breath I Tarry", and many others. He wrote from the early 1960s until his death in 1995, and he had a writing voice like no other, in my honest opinion.
