If I'm evil pirate equity or vulture capital, I'd do as much as possible to hide that the persons driving my fleet of trucks were imported cheap labor. My trucking company would lease or own as many American truck cabs as possible, and put Mexicans and Canadians behind the wheel.
That works for Mexicans I suppose, but there is no profit in hiring Canucks that way, as their standard of living is identical to ours, though with higher costs due to the difference between Yankee bucks and Looney bucks.
The idea that Canucks are coming down here stealing American jobs and working for pennies on the dollar is just plain ridiculous.
And even if that is true, it is not illegal - The article is talking about ILLEGAL truckers.
That means the employer has leverage with which to "encourage" an H1-B visa worker to "voluntarily" work more than 40 hours for salary or without the benefit of over-time pay.
Or the reverse... I have worked construction and heavy industry as a contractor nearly all my life. I hung out my shingle before I was out of high school and almost always worked as a subcontractor Without benefit of 40 hour weeks and overtime concerns. Almost my whole life has been about contracts, not hours.
It's people like me that move the world, NOT the guys pulling down a paycheck and putting in the time. THAT part is right. The vast majority of American workers think their sh*t don't stink, but whine and cry if they have to work long to finish a project, and bitch and moan about double pay for overtime... Well take a walk then.
I hardly EVER saw a 40 hour week. Hell I rarely saw a 60 hour week.
Americans used to know what work is. Not anymore.
