 Kash Patel announces FBI ditching DC headquarters, transferring 1,500 agents

FBI Director Kash Patel announced Friday that the bureau is leaving its longtime headquarters in the J. Edgar Hoover Building and would transfer 1,500 employees to locations around the country.

“This FBI is leaving the Hoover building because this building is unsafe for our workforce,” Patel told Fox Business anchor Maria Bartiromo in an interview.

“We want the American men and women to know if you’re going to come work at the premier law enforcement agency in the world, we’re going to give you a building that’s commensurate with that, and that’s not this place.”

Patel did not specify what safety hazards are posed by the massive brutalist structure on Pennsylvania Avenue between the White House and Congress, or share a timeframe for the move or the bureau’s new headquarters location.

“Look, the FBI is 38,000 when we are fully manned, which we are not. In the national capital region in the 50-mile radius around Washington, DC, there were 11,000 FBI employees. That’s like a third of the workforce. A third of the crime doesn’t happen here,” Patel said.

They should move the headquarters to the middle of the country. Get them out of DC!

This is a smart move.

I remember visiting that building in the 1960s as a Girl Scout. (Yikes, I'm old). I don't doubt it's deteriorated to the point of being unsafe.

Hmm, I know we visited some FBI HQ back then, on our troop's trip to D.C. I thought it was the Hoover building.  :shrug:

The J. Edgar Hoover Building, which houses the FBI headquarters in Washington, D.C., was completed in 1975. Construction started in the early 1960s but faced delays. The first FBI employees moved in on June 28, 1974, and the building was dedicated on September 30, 1975.


J. Edgar Tranny didn’t retire till 1972 so I’m sure he had lots of bugs included in the construction so he could spy on his people.

FBI Director Kash Patel has announced plans to redeploy 1,500 FBI agents and analysts from Washington to various locations nationwide. The decision includes closing the J. Edgar Hoover FBI Building. The FBI employs about 11,000 of its 38,000 staff in the National Capital Region.
