If you aren't Catholic then you don't believe that this Pope was elected through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, so you'll troll through his twitter feed and analyze his selection through a modern political lens, as if he was just elected to a seat in the US senate rather than the Chair of Saint Peter.

If you are a believing Catholic then you do (or should) believe that his election is ordained by God. You view it through the lens of 2,000 years of Church history and the eternal will of the Almighty God. From that perspective, playing the gotcha game with old tweets is silly and bizarre.

This is why any conversation about the Pope on this site is destined to be disjointed, confused, and ultimately useless.

Does man have free will or not?

It is as simple as that.

Who is voting for these popes?

Pope Francis appointed 108 of the 133 cardinals.  They would have been the ones.

I am former/lapsed Episcopalian, and can promise you that once the progressives have a majority, they never let go.  Francis was mainly progressive on economic matters and the erasure of borders.  So it's not the same, but I suspect Leo was chosen as a foil for the US administration.  Would love to be proven wrong.

That's the problem with Rome.

The Bible gives clear directions for apostolic succession in Acts. The candidates are supposed to be chosen by lottery, just as Matthias was chosen to succeed Judas Iscariot. Having the cardinals vote is like sticking fingers on the scales of a decision that is supposed to be the work of God.

But Rome would rather have its "sacred tradition," invent an alleged apparition of the Virgin Mary (Guadalupe anyone?) to justify the new dogma and do what they want... and wonders why there are still Protestants and a schism with the East.

I, for one, am not impressed. Why anyone would select an American pope in this age when the American Catholic church is imploding (our local diocese just slashed half of the churches in its jurisdiction a couple months ago) and the American public is falling into debauchery? From a city known for its corruption, no less.

I grew up in the Roman Catholic system.  There are many things they want you to believe, and I disagree.  This pope, as every pope before him, were selected by a handful of men.  And those men are just as political as the folks in Washington, they are more adept at keeping it behind closed doors and not in the face of the general population by pushing their agenda publicly or in the media.

Pope Francis should have stayed in his lane and worried about the souls of his flock.  From my perspective, his chastising the US  for not having open borders, my response to that is, when Rome allows 20 million illegal invaders into their space, then they can say something.  Otherwise, they are meddling where they are not welcome.

The Vatican has too many black stains on its own reputation to dare open their mouth about what happens in the USA.  Helping Nazis escape Europe for countries like Argentina, the massive global abuse of innocent young children by priests and the cover up efforts by those in the hierarchy, etc.  They should focus on their own ongoing failures and criminal behavior.

After seeing the movie Spotlight in the theater, and talking to the couple behind me after the movie ended, made for a lifelong memory of abuse.  When I stood and looked back, the husband of said couple clearly had tears rolling down his face.  We struck up a conversation, and he informed me he was abused repeatedly by a priest when he was a young boy.  The movie pointed out there have been over 250,000 children in the USA sexually assaulted by priests.  To me, that is a shocking number.

I was fortunate and did not have to deal with that abuse growing up.  The priests I knew were all good men.  But when you consider the reverence priests are held in by members of the church, the abuse they undertake makes it that much worse in my opinion.

And did they need to show ID to vote? Because that would be racist, right?

If you ain't Catholic just STFU.  You don't have a dog in this hunt.  I like the fact that The Pope grew up in the Midwest.  He is a child of the 50's, 60's and 70's. Great time to be a kid in America. He graduated from college in 77. That also makes him about the same age as most of us Catholics who post here..... give or take a few years.  Lets just back off the naysaying and see what he does.

No. When a Catholic leader like Bergoglio tells my country to surrender our sovereignty then I in return can and will comment as I please on the affairs of the Roman Catholic church.

That said I will hold my comments on Leo until I know more about him.

Which explains my anger. Nothing has done more to lift people out of poverty than free market capitalism. If these poops had any brains, they'd realize that, unless they're being deliberately ignorant.

The Bible does no such thing.  It was the disciples who chose on their own accord to cast lots and select a successor.  There was no Biblical instruction or word from G-d telling them to do so.  Also, this occurred before Pentecost.  You will find that 'casting lots' was never mentioned again.

With the majority of border jumpers here raised in the Catholic religion, it DOES matter how much the Papal Seat stays the heck out of politics.
