US stepping back from peace talks role to end war between Russia and Ukraine: State Department official

The US is stepping back from its involvement in peace talks between Russia and Ukraine to end the war, a State Department official signaled Thursday.

State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce told reporters that the US “will not be the mediators” going forward, reflecting President Trump’s frustration at the lack of progress between Kyiv and Moscow in ending the bloodshed.

“We are not going to fly around the world at the drop of a hat to mediate meetings,” she said, adding that the US remains committed to helping reach a deal.

“It is now between the two parties, and now — now is the time that they need to present and develop concrete ideas about how this conflict is going to end. It’s going to be up to them,” Bruce said.

Bruce’s comments come as Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio have similarly said that it’s ultimately up to Ukraine and Russia to make their own peace.

“It’s going to be up to them to come to an agreement and stop this brutal, brutal conflict,” Vance said in an interview on Fox News’ “Special Report with Bret Baier” show.

As the conflict currently stands, Vance said, “It’s not going anywhere.”

The only way to make progress is make Russia pay rapidly increasing costs for continuing it. A lesson China needs to learn before they jump off the war cliff.

Trump, the only way to end the war is to have one side be victorious.

Russians will not want peace until Putin fears he is loosing his grip on the country.  There's only so many generals he can afford to fall of balconies.

True

Neither side is ready for peace at this time. Russia's idea of 'peace' is keeping everything they have stolen. Zelinsky sees peace as Russia fully leaving all land which has been traditionally a part of Ukraine, including Crimea.

Russia still thinks they can physically defeat Ukraine in war. If Russia loses to Ukraine, (losing means anything short of complete victory) Russia will be shamed for decades and will no longer be taken seriously as a world power.

On the other hand, Zelinsky believes they can defeat Russia in Ukraine over time. Russia is weak and is close to economic and governmental collapse.

With both sides determined to keep going at least for the near term, there can be no peace by Trump, the EU, or anyone else. As Trump said, there has to be a seismic shift in the war, something consequential must change for an agreement to become possible.

You cannot "COEXIST" with people who want to kill you.
If they kill their own with no conscience, there is nothing to stop them from killing you.
