An Entire Generation Has Turned Feral

What do you get when you take a 40 percent out-of-wedlock birthrate, mix it with a 25 percent absentee-father rate, and sprinkle some social media on top?

You get feral kids.

Raised by their devices and peers, and educated not in the school of virtue but of virality, most of them are in their late teens to early twenties. Anybody living in our nation’s largest cities has become acquainted with these kids in recent years — from the teen takeovers in Chicago and illegal house parties in Nashville to the drag racing in Florida and the storming of malls in California. These kids have reached the age of majority, and they have been sicced on the world.

What crimes do they commit? Looting, assault, damage to property, illegal drag racing, setting off fireworks, obstructing traffic, violating curfew, arson, evading arrest — the works. On March 28, a 15-year-old boy was shot during a teen takeover in Chicago’s Streeterville neighborhood. On March 29, a hundred-strong mob vandalized police cars in the Ozone Park neighborhood of Queens. That same day, motorists on three-wheelers staged a takeover of Washington Avenue in Houston.

On February 28, some 200 teenagers broke into a newly built home in East Nashville and threw a party with booze and drugs. Owner Kyle Grasser was alerted and called the police, only to learn that no officers were available. He was forced to break up the party himself. The teenagers caused $100,000 in damage.

Neighbor kids did some sort of firecracker/gunpowder thing with a full coke can the other day. The coke flew 60 feet and hit my porch window and alerted me. I went looking for the culprit and my son said the neighbor kids ducked in their house and turned off the lights. I didn't think much of it, just a coke can spewing in the corner (I thought).... The next day I noticed they had broke the glass and were just going to hide from it. The glass had a small crack in it from where I had thrown firewood (it bounced) and put a small crack in it.... But their crack was huge and had a small nickle size hole in it, so I went to the neighbors and said we will price the repair and they can pay for half of it. He agree, but these grandkids he is raising (mother is druggy) is taxing him pretty heavy.

Well, they have been told:

There is no God.

When you're dead, you're dead.

The world is ending in some catastrophe or another.

That all unpins morality, and sucks them into a selfish 'Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we may die!" attitude, living in the moment rather than planning ahead.

Sure, you can blame culture, media, schools, and their peers, but in the end they're their parents' kids and the problem starts there.

Property damage... I got busted at a kegger on a farmer's back 40... Got hung with terrible property damage... which wound up me disking up the field that he was gonna disc up anyway, and replacing 1/2 mile of rickety fence that fell over due to nothing we did - the snow pushed it over the winter past... All while he sat on his porch and chuckled.

My daughter's generation figured out if they left the places they partied cleaner than they were when they got there, landowners would not object to the occasional bash. They weren't wrong.
