Inside the Amazing Navy FLIP Ship Designed for Rough Seas

Step inside the extraordinary US Navy FLIP ship, a unique vessel built to withstand the roughest seas. Designed to turn 90° during challenging conditions, the FLIP (Floating Instrument Platform) allows for unparalleled stability in oceanographic research. In this video, we explore its fascinating engineering, how it flips during intense waves, and the science behind its design. Get a rare look at one of the most innovative ships in the Navy’s fleet, crafted for extreme maritime research.

crafted for extreme maritime research.

Does "extreme maritime research" translate to prove global warming? :pondering:

Nah. It was built in 1962 (I remembered seeing this from when I was a kid) and decommissioned in 2023. Not built to prove Global Warming, as that scam wasn't a 'thing' yet.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

The 1960s research ship that could flip was named FLIP, which stood for Floating Instrument Platform. It was owned by the U.S. Office of Naval Research and operated by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. FLIP was designed to partially flood and flip 90 degrees, becoming essentially a vertical platform with only the front 17 meters (55 feet) visible above the water.
