President Trump: Tariffs Will Lead to Income Tax Relief, Even Elimination

Lowell Cauffiel 27 Apr 2025

President Donald Trump said Sunday that his tariff policy will substantially reduce, even completely eliminate, income taxes for some American workers.

“When Tariffs cut in, many people’s Income Taxes will be substantially reduced, maybe even completely eliminated,” Trump wrote in a 6:06 a.m. post on Truth Social. “Focus will be on people making less than $200,000 a year.”

Trump continued, “Also, massive numbers of jobs are already being created, with new plants and factories currently being built or planned. It will be a BONANZA FOR AMERICA!!! THE EXTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE IS HAPPENING!!!

Trump has promoted an “external revenue service” before but may be citing the attractive idea again in the face of continuing criticism by detractors that he has launched a destructive “trade war” that has rattled the U.S. stock market and will result in higher prices for consumers.

On April 2, Trump imposed a series of tariffs on nations around the world including a 10 percent tariff on virtually everything coming into the United States. The tariff on India was set at 26 percent, while China has taken the biggest hit with 145 percent levies.

Since, however, the administration has walked back some of the policy. It has put a 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs, launched negotiations with dozens of countries looking for new trade deals, and focused much of its tariff fire on China.

Get rid of income tax, but replace it with another tax called "tariffs"

Ordinary people will still be paying a tax ... does Team Trump really think people will fall for this "great deal"?

Historically, our greatest economic growth happened after GATT took effect.

His administration is a collection of yes men.  There is no culture of feedback, which leads to their boss making these born yesterday, nonsensical remarks.

  • I was a "conspiracy theorist". Now I'm just right.
I get it. The people whining most loudly about tariffs which they might pick up the tab for are the ones who would be least affected by the elimination of the Income Tax.

Where a flat tax would only affect those with income, and a consumption tax would raise the price of domestic and imported goods equally, a tariff only affects imported items. Make it here (employ Americans) and there is no tariff.

Yes, the transition to making our own stuff will take a little time, but in the long run, there would be more Americans with jobs, and more of our dollars staying home, especially if we quit giving billions to countries all over (or to NGOs to skim and donate to the DNC and Leftist 'causes').

As a bonus, other countries might reduce their tariffs on our goods, which would help our manufacturing sector as well.

The problem is, everyone seems to want to take a day trader attitude toward a long term economic goal. If they don't get instant gratification, they are running for the wings and screaming doom and gloom.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

The only problem with the income tax is that too few people pay it.  Everyone working should pay it.  And they should all be paying the same rate.

If we are implementing tariffs as a primary source of government revenue, then history has taught us nothing.

And of course all this talk of taxes and revenue ignores the number one problem we face - spending.

Economically there are so many problems with income taxes it's hard to know where to begin, but I'll start with Who gets to precisely define the word "Income"?
