Nine people are dead and dozens left injured after a driver sent an SUV careering into a crowded street festival in Vancouver late Saturday night.

AP reports the vehicle entered the Canadian street where people were attending a Filipino community festival just after 8 p.m. Friday, the Vancouver Police Department said in a social media post.

“A number of people have been killed and multiple others are injured after a driver drove into a crowd,” police said.

A suspect has been arrested by Vancouver Police after several people were killed and multiple others injured at a neighbourhood street party in South Vancouver earlier tonight. 

At approximately 8:14 p.m. on April 26, a man drove into a large crowd of people attending the Lapu Lapu Day Festival near East 43rd Avenue and Fraser Street. 

A 30-year-old suspect, a Vancouver man, was arrested at the scene. 

The investigation is ongoing and is being led the Vancouver Police Department’s Major Crime Section.

The Lapu Lapu Day festival was being held in a South Vancouver neighbourhood. Video posted on social media showed victims and debris strewn across a long stretch of road, with at least seven people lying immobile on the ground.

9 people have been killed following the car ramming attack against a Filipino street festival in Vancouver, Canada.
Vancouver Police arrested the driver, a male aged 30, and have said they do not believe it was “an act of terrorism.”
Police said a man drove into a large group of people at the Lapu Lapu Day Block Party - named after a national hero of the Philippines - near 43rd Avenue and Fraser Street at around 8.14pm local time on Saturday.
The force said the suspect, who is from Vancouver was "known" to them.

The suspect who was arrested for killing at least nine people with his SUV at a festival in Vancouver, Canada, looked to the crowd and uttered 'I'm sorry' after the ordeal.

Chaos erupted at the Lapu Lapu Day festival when the vehicle rammed into people just after 8pm on Saturday night. An unnamed 30-year-old man was arrested.

Dead bodies and injured partygoers were seen along a narrow street in South Vancouver lined by food trucks. The front of the driver's SUV was smashed in.

Video circulating on social media showed a young man in a black hoodie with his back against a chain-link fence, alongside a security guard and surrounded by bystanders screaming and swearing at him, the Associated Press reported.

'I´m sorry,' the man said, holding his hand to his head, according to AP.

Interim Vancouver Police Chief Steve Rai declined to comment on the video, but said the person in custody was a 'lone male' who was 'known to police in certain circumstances.'

Cops ruled out that it was an act of terrorism.

The suspect — a still unidentified 30-year-old man from Vancouver — was “known” to law enforcement after a “significant” history with police interactions, and was also well known to health-care professionals related to mental health,” interim Vancouver Police Chief Steve Rai told reporters Sunday.

In addition to the dead, dozens more are injured after the Saturday attack at the celebration for Filipino Lapu Lapu Day, and police cautioned that more victims could succumb to their injuries

Likely because they (and the mental health professionals around) knew the guy was batsh*t crazy, but didn't do anything to prevent him from taking insanity to the next level.

It could be that they just knew the guy was nuts and became complacent about it.

Which might have created the urge to do something to be noticed...

Just because someone is crazy doesn't mean they can't be a terrorist or do hideous things, if anything, it may well increase the chances. But in today's political climate, you need a 'cause' to be recognized as a terrorist. Without a manifesto and all that stuff, it might just be considered a hideous crime.
