Pope Francis' funeral Mass has ended, and the pontiff will be laid to rest at Santa Maria Maggiore. He requested to be buried there in his final will and testament.

"I have always entrusted my life and the priestly and episcopal ministry to the Mother of Our Lord, Mary Most Holy. Therefore, I ask that my mortal remains rest waiting for the day of the resurrection in the Papal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore," the pope wrote.

Pope Francis will be the first pope in more than a century to not be buried beneath St Peter’s Basilica. He requested his tomb be "simple, without particular decorum and with the only inscription: Franciscus."

VATICAN CITY, VATICAN – APRIL 26: Cardinals attend the funeral of Pope Francis in St. Peter’s Square on April 26, 2025 in Vatican City, Vatican. Pope Francis died on April 21st at the age of 88. Born in Argentina as Jorge Mario Bergoglio, he was the first Latin American and the first Jesuit to become Pope when elected in 2013. Taking the name Francis after St Francis of Assisi, he promoted a more humble version of the papacy than many of his predecessors. He will be buried outside of the Vatican in a simple wooden coffin at the Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore.

Gee, I hope Joe was able to get a selfie with the Pontiff's body in the background. All the cool kids were doing it, I hear.

Francis's funeral: What happened
Story by TOI Lifestyle Desk

First, he ruffled feathers with his oddly cheerful remark about looking forward to attending Pope Francis's funeral. Now, US President Donald Trump is once again under fire for his 'disrespectful behavior' at Pope Francis's funeral today on April 26, sparking online fury.

Wonder what went wrong this time?

At the open-air funeral mass in St Peter’s Square, international leaders, cardinals, presidents and prime ministers gathered to pay their final respects to the leader of the Catholic Church. Trump along with his wife Melania was present too, seated in the front row, contrary to the rumours of them being pushed to the third row. Pope and Trump had sharply different views and the former often criticized him.

The first couple of America, paused as they passed Pope Francis's coffin and paid their respects. However, what didn't go unnoticed was Trump's peculiar outfit for the occasion, which did not align with what others were wearing. While everyone else including his wife First Lady Melania Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine were dressed in black, in line with Catholic customs, Trump stood out in a blue suit. Ironically, during his White House visit Zelenskyy was mocked for not wearing a suit and dressing inappropriately for the occasion.

If his suit is odd, then what about those sheikhs on the fourth row?  I’m sure they would love to build some minarets around St Peters.

He wasn't the only man there in a navy blue suit, e.g., the Prince of Wales, but the media needed something to complain about.

In view of current events and the fact that I'm not Catholic, I decided to watch a movie called "The Conclave" last night in the hope of learning something about the process. And while I did get an idea about that I was also subjected to a bunch of political propaganda and will never watch another movie from Warner Brothers because of that.

"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."

Well, I looked it up. Wearing black at funerals is a fashion  promulgated by Queen Victoria after the death of Prince Albert that spread throughout western Europe.
She asked me name my foe then. I said the need within some men to fight and kill their brothers without thought of Love or God. Ken Hensley

Remember when George W Bush and Hillary Clinton wore blue to a funeral and no one cared?

Vatican Announces Date for Conclave to Elect New Pope
Simon Kent 28 Apr 2025

A commencement date for the conclave to elect a successor to the late Pope Francis was announced Monday by the Vatican.

Wednesday, May 7, has been confirmed as the starting point for the ritual open election to decide who will succeed Francis after his 12-year papacy.

It will be held in the Sistine Chapel of the Apostolic Palace in Vatican City.

AP reports the date of the conclave was chief on the agenda of cardinals holding informal meetings to hash out church business following the April 21 death of Pope Francis.

They held off on announcing the opening of the conclave until after his funeral on Saturday, AP set out in its report.

The Vatican said more than 180 participated in the fifth informal meeting in Rome on Monday while smaller group of 135, known as the College of Cardinals, is eligible to elect a new pope.

Only cardinals under 80 are eligible to vote, and it is not clear how many of the 135 will participate.

Trump Gets Last Laugh After Liberal Attack Backfires

Trending Politics News
By Mark Steffen
April 28, 2025

For days, critics of President Donald Trump were gloating that the leader of the free world would be situated in the third row during funeral proceedings for the late Pope Francis, a possibility that was put to rest when he appeared front and center.

Many of the most boastful were mostly silent after seeing Trump and his wife Melania sitting with front-row seats for the procession on Saturday extending through the St. Peter’s Basilica, a decision that Vatican officials defended as consistent with protocol.

In contrast, former President Joe Biden sat five rows back, a humiliating spectacle for the 82-year-old Catholic just over three months out of the job.

Francis, the church’s 266th pope, passed away last week after suffering a stroke. The 88-year-old had just recovered from a prolonged bout of pneumonia that doctors said nearly killed him twice.
