Bipartisan Senate resolution would repeal Trump's tariffs amid his global trade war: 'Enough is enough'
'Tariffs are taxes, and the power to tax belongs to Congress—not the president,' Sen. Rand Paul said

By Landon Mion FOXBusiness

A bipartisan group of senators is introducing a resolution to repeal President Donald Trump’s global tariffs, after the administration ignited a trade war with countries around the world.

Sens. Rand Paul, R-Ky., and Ron Wyden, D-Ore., led the resolution, which was also signed onto by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and Sens. Tim Kaine, D-Va., Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., Peter Welch, D-Vt., and Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass.

"Tariffs are taxes, and the power to tax belongs to Congress—not the president," Paul said in a statement. "Our Founders were clear: tax policy should never rest in the hands of one person. Abusing emergency powers to impose blanket tariffs not only drives up costs for American families but also tramples on the Constitution. It’s time Congress reasserts its authority and restores the balance of power."

Paul has been a staunch critic of tariffs during his time in office and has consistently opposed the use of emergency declarations to circumvent Congress.

I generally agree with Rand but he is wrong here. What Trump is doing needs to be done at least until we make OUR tax system much more made in America friendly. Currently, it is anything but.

That and the other 90 years of laws since FDR threatened to stack the courts, EPA etc.

IMO Trump should have just operated like a Reagan on steroids, cut regulations down, DOGE Is cutting waste, some punitive tariffs on China... his approval would be like over 70% now. Unfortunately he fumbled this big time. But will see if nations actually do fold and offer concessions. The feel I'm getting from my normie friends and family  isn't good at the moment.

Trump pushes back on 'rebel' Republicans over tariffs: 'You don't negotiate like I negotiate'
Bipartisan groups of senators and congressmen have opposed Trump's tariff policies
By Stephen Sorace Fox News
Published April 9, 2025 8:24am EDT

President Donald Trump on Tuesday blasted some Republican members of Congress for trying to limit his presidential powers on instituting tariffs so that Congress could retake control.

Trump delivered a speech to the National Republican Congressional Committee, calling out "rebel" Republicans while speaking about his trade policies.

"And then I see some rebel Republican, some guy who wants to grandstand, say, 'I think that Congress should take over negotiations.' Let me tell you, you don't negotiate like I negotiate," Trump said.

Rep. Don Bacon, R-Neb., is leading a bipartisan bill to block Trump from instituting tariffs and retake that power for Congress. Bacon told reporters earlier on Tuesday that he didn’t like "the thought of waging a trade war with the entire world."

  • I was a "conspiracy theorist". Now I'm just right.
These are opening gambits in negotiations for more fair trade.

Wait and let the process play out instead of having a panic attack and kneecapping it.

It isn't as if the GOP understands squat about horsetrading, anyway, especially when you look at their track record sorting out funding measures with the Democrats. The Democrats just want to short circuit the process because, Trump.

Trump is engaging in creative destruction to create an international trade regime that is more fair to America and American companies.

He has to do this because American trade representatives, American diplomats, American Presidents, and American Congress has failed to adequately fight for American exporters.

Trump has to do this because American presidents, congress, trade representatives, Wall Street strategists have -- for 30 years -- been the authors of anti-America global trade practices and their most reliable protectors

So you are comfortable enough on the path we had been going along, and spending more on interest than defense is the right way to go?

Am glad you only have one vote.

I recall the days when there was no such thing as a cell phone, and was pretty happy having other goals.

They should have set limits with the authority to impose tariffs.

Those poor penguins on that uninhabited island in the south Indian Ocean won't be able to export their guano to the US.

  • Dems-greatest existential threat to USA republic!
It is Congress that has abdicated their role as stated in the Constitution.  How many decades do we need to wait for the corrupt Congress to do their stinking job?  Tell me anything they have done to encourage the creation of thousands of jobs in the USA.  They haven't done sh*t, and your flaunting the Constitution is laughable when they do not do jack sh*t!!!!!!!!!

Are we not kicking the can down the road for the budget year that started OCTOBER 1, 2024?  The clowns on these boards that bark the Constitution when the very people granted the responsibilities in the Constitution NEVER CARRY THEM OUT!!!!!!!!  Please!!!!!!

There is a reason Congress has a positive rating in the teens.  They abdicate their job every day.  Either they do their job, or they should be forced out.  That is why having TERM LIMITS to get rid of all the self serving DEAD WOOD is so necessary, but we all know these clowns will not EVER vote for TERM LIMITS.

And let's be honest.  Our republic has not existed for at least five years.  The republic is dead, and will remain so , until such time we have honest elections.  And I do not see that day coming any time soon.

that is exactly why I keep telling y'all that all this presidential populism is nothing but a waste of time and energy.

The ONLY thing that can put us back on the tracks is a righteous Congress, jealous of its powers. THAT is what y'all desperately need to be working toward - And it is a labor that will cost at least a generation to git er done.

Question though... do you support repealing the Filibuster rule? I Don't see Congress ever even getting close to "clawing back" it's original rules without this.

You still believe in Santa and the Easter Bunny, eh?  Congress will resort to doing their job when pigs fly.  Why should they do anything different?  Only 2-3 % of them bite the dust in an election cycle.  Incumbents have to rape more than one woman or child even to be considered for a possible loss of their office.

There's your problem, right there. Until y'all demand performance from them sonsabiches, nothing will change.

I am in favor of the filibuster. I am also in favor of state control of the senate - I think governors should appoint senators. The House is the will of the people. the Senate is supposed to be the will of the states. It won't work right till that.

All we have to do is ask how did Chuck Schumer acquire a net worth of 75 million dollars working in govt his entire life.
