Fed Chair: Tariffs Likely to Raise Inflation, Slow Growth

Friday, 04 April 2025 11:46 AM EDT

The Trump administration’s expansive new tariffs will likely lead to higher inflation and slower growth, and the Federal Reserve will focus on keeping price increases temporary, Fed Chair Jerome Powell said Friday.

Powell said in written remarks that the tariffs, and their impacts on the economy and inflation, are “significantly larger than expected.” He also said that the import taxes are “highly likely” to lead to “at least a temporary rise in inflation,” but added that “it is also possible that the effects could be more persistent.”

“Our obligation is to ... make certain that a one-time increase in the price level does not become an ongoing inflation problem,” Powell said in remarks being delivered in Arlington, Virginia.

Powell’s focus on inflation suggests that the Fed will likely keep its benchmark interest rate unchanged at about 4.3% in the coming months. That is likely to disappoint Wall Street investors, who now expect five interest rate cuts this year, a number that has increased since President Donald Trump announced the tariffs Wednesday.

Economists forecast that the tariffs will weaken the economy, possibly threaten hiring, and push up prices. In that scenario, the Fed could cut rates to bolster the economy, or it could keep rates unchanged — or even hike them — to combat inflation. Powell’s comments suggest the Fed will mostly focus on inflation.

Fed Chair: Tariffs Likely to Raise Inflation, Slow Growth

No pain....  no gain.

It now just boils down to whether our hedonistic populous can stand the discomfort.

I display the Confederate Battle Flag in honor of my great great great grandfathers who spilled blood at Wilson's Creek and Shiloh.  5 others served in the WBTS with honor too.

We have become such a WEAK society, physically and mentally.  How pathetic!!!!!!!!!

It is long overdue that we have any form of leadership in the USA, right or wrong.  I believe long term what Trump is doing will benefit the people of the USA, as well as the world.  The difference, the people of the USA will no longer be bent over and abused and expected to say thank you sir.  Hopefully, those days are over.

China most importantly should NOT have favored trading status in any way.  And frankly, I am tired of hearing about Tiktok.  I say shut it down completely, and I do not give one crap what teen and preteens have to say.  Get a life already!!!!!!

And the time has come if Europe is not going to practice fair trade, I say we end funding the defense of Europe.  The USA is funding 75% of NATO, I say drop it down to 10%, and then 0% if they do not step up to trade fairly.  Same for Japan.  Japan and South Korea both have high tariffs against the USA, along with just about every Asian country.  Screw them.

Aand as a point of national security, 80% of all pharma should be required by law to be made in the USA that is used by the people of the USA.  One way to make it happen is end funding pharma made in other countries by federal tax dollars.  You want to provide pharma to folks on Medicare and Medicaid, it must be made in the USA, otherwise the feds will only pay 40% of the cost.

Note, that all these companies had their plants in the USA at one time and moved them overseas.  End any tax breaks for companies with operations overseas.  Kick corporations int he *ss and make them return to the USA tomorrow.

Is Powell aware of just how bad inflation has been  since 2021?

The ONLY thing that causes inflation is the Fed creating dollars out of thin air.  If the Fed would stop printing money, then there wouldn't be any inflation.

Is there anything the Fed has been right about over the last forty years?  Anything?
