China retaliates with 34% tariffs on US imports
New China tariffs against the U.S. will go into effect on April 10

China announced Friday it will impose 34% tariffs on the U.S., just days after President Donald Trump unveiled the same amount against Beijing under his reciprocal tariff plan.

The new China tariffs against the U.S. will go into effect on April 10, according to The Wall Street Journal.

"The U.S. announced tariff hikes on imports from many countries, including China, under the pretext of reciprocity. This gravely violates World Trade Organization rules, and undermines the rules-based multilateral trading system. China firmly rejects this and will do what is necessary to defend our legitimate rights and interests," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said at a briefing in Beijing yesterday.

"We have emphasized more than once that trade and tariff wars have no winners. Protectionism leads nowhere. We urge the U.S. to stop doing the wrong thing, and resolve trade differences with China and other countries through consultation with equality, respect and mutual benefit," he added.

China is about the most protectionist country out there. The hypocrisy is so thick you could build a football stadium on it.

Has anyone reported on what tariff China already had imposed on US goods before Trump took action? Seems like something to know.

If only the presidents and congresscritters of the past few decades had adopted laws and policies to promote American manufacturing, perhaps we wouldn't be in this trade deficit pickle.

The two aren't necessarily related.  Protecting US manufacturing does not mean we will have a trade balance.

Eliminating the trade deficit is not important in the grand scheme of things.  Trade surpluses do not translate to economic prosperity.  As long as GDP browth outpaces the trade deficit (which it easily does), then we are OK.  And the result of that deficit is that our dollars flow to other parts of the world.  And there's only one place for those people to invest those dollars.  The US.

Trump should have just put imports on China only and nobody would have cared, even worldwide, because other countries hate china as much as we do on this issue

So you are comfortable with +100% Canadian tariffs on US dairy products, and the EU tariffs of 10% on American made cars while US only places 2.5% of EU made cars?

If so, please explain how these unequal duties benefit the USA.

It's called the difference between being tactful and tactless. Canada and the EU didn't strip America or it's manufacturing jobs... they're basically in the same boat we are, or similar.

The word tact and Donald Trump is analogous to bull and  china shop.  In the normal world, I'd tend to agree.  But now is not normal, and we have played nicely with a "kick me" post-em on our back for decades.

I support a shift change on how trade is managed in this country. This week was only the opening salvo.  When the floodgates open, and other countries  start doing reciprocal trading?   Trump will come across as a genius.

When competing an opponent like China, I'm not sure alienating the rest of the world, especially when they might sympathize with you, is a good idea.

Welp, from what I've read, Trump is actually partially right, our trading partners are often not fair with us. Which I wish he would have revised his graphic to show more truthful numbers, knock off the China tariffs first, maybe then put the EU on notice.

Define 'equity'.  Are you seeking equity of opportunity?  Or equity of result?  If it is the former, then expect trade deficits (which are not a bad thing).  But if you are looking for net zero trade balance, then the only way to achieve that is to ban imports altogether.

putting the EU on notice?

That's sorta like Biden putting Iran on notice, then handing them a billion $ cash on a pallet.  The EU would simply continue tariffing us without consequence.

I get it, you think China is the enemy, and it is.  Doesn't mean 'friends' should be stealing our jobs, taking our money, and not paying their fair share of defense.
