I remember libs arguing that we shouldn't open up ANWAR because it would be years before we saw the oil being produced. If we don't start now when?

When it doesn't starve American industry for parts and supplies.

Quote
Do you remember the tariffs Pres. Trump placed on China before Biden stole the 2020 election? They were never dropped because the Rats loved the revenue and dropping them would have created a huge backlash. Wall Street and the legacy media are freaking out because they know these tariffs are never going to fully go away. They may get reduced, but there will always be tariffs at some level.

So, you're pointing to Dem endorsement for legitimacy? Dems have ALWAYS been *FOR* tariffs. And DEMs have ALWAYS BEEN WRONG.

Quote
Having spent 40 years in real estate I'm well aware that the big investments will take years, but once it becomes clear the tariffs are not going away and ground starts getting broken the investments will go forward. We may pay more in the short run, but the benefits of having a growing middle class and security found in being able to make our essential goods more than outweights that.

Riiiight. Let's play a game. You're an American businessman trying to build a product. Hit with tariffs, you now pay a 20-30% surtax on every part you need to order from china. On each item you make, that amounts to 3 subcomponents and 75 parts that you get to pay extra for.

But your margin, your profit, per item is something around 25%. So the tariff just wiped out your profit. What will you do?

ANSWER: Make the product over in China and only get hit by the tariff ONCE on one product instead of over and over on the subcomponents and parts... while taking advantage of business friendly regulation and super cheap labor to offset the cost of the tariff.

Y'all are blind. They will take your fortune and your liberty, and you will smile and let them.  **nononono*

Remember the “shovel ready jobs” that we were supposed to get with Obama’s so-called recovery act? An Obama administration at the time was quick to air examples of companies promising to invest and grow due to the so-called economic stimulus.

It wasn’t until a few years later that Obama admitted that those shovel ready  jobs were not so shovel ready

Trump and his supporters are making the same argument. And it’s the same arguments that were made in the 1890 tariffs and Smoot-Hawley.

Both actually caused economic strife and were unpopular  and it  cost Republicans electorally. And in the case of Smoot-Hawley, it ushered in a very progressive president that prolonged the pain of the Great Depression

Republicans were already paying the price electorally speaking in these special elections and that’s even before the full weight of these tariffs have kicked in

YOU are the one who's blind! @roamer_1

Prior to WWII most everything we bought here was made here. Having things stamped with "Made in the USA" used to be a source of pride and we sorely need to get back to that. Trump is desperately trying to make that happen but it cannot happen overnight and some pain is going to be involved of necessity.

Our Communist inspired TAX SYSTEM - The Corporate Income tax in particular - is what has driven all our manufacturing offshore.

There is no one alive who can tell you with precision what it costs to manufacture a paperclip in this country ex all the taxes and compliance costs embedded therein. There is no way to adjust that at the border so that Made in the USA paperclip is at a large price disadvantage before it ever even sees the boat! The same is true for EVERY other thing with the "Made in USA" label and THAT is why there are very few of those things now.

"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."

Trump supporters tell us that this country sucks and that Americans must suffer economic pain as a result for Donald Trump’s impulsive

Yet, our economy is the largest in the world, and we lead the world economy. United States leads the world in medical innovation and entrepreneurship. People come to this country for a better life. Our poor have a higher standard of living than many other countries middle class however it’s defined.

Donald Trump said during the campaign if you liked your 401(k), you’ll  vote for him over Harris. Now the messages for voters is  how dare you want financial security.

Democrats told the American people they didn’t know what they were talking about when Americans were dissatisfied with the state of the economy and they paid the price.

Republicans are starting to assert themselves on this issue. It’s about time and I hope they continue.

And I suspect that after Congress switches from Republican to Democrat  after next year’s midterms, Congress will further reassert themselves with more Republicans siding with Democrats on this issue

The agriculture Secretary is already hinting that we’re gonna need to bail out our farmers and ranchers like we did after the 2018 tariffs. So on top of the tariffs, we taxpayers now get to pay bail outs. That should be popular with the American people.

Can we go back to NAFTA now?  We were much better off when Mexico and Canada were charging us 0% tariffs.

I’m gonna make a shaky prediction

I believe that as this continues and his poll  numbers drop and economic anxiety continues its rise , he’s gonna try to find some off ramp. I don’t believe he wants to go down in history as Herbert Hoover part two. But he’s gonna try to find someway to extradite himself from this while trying to save face

The problem with that strategy it’s based on the idea that then other countries will trust him.

Oh I know. I seen it coming a mile off - Especially since he did it the last time.

Your position is precisely true.
This will not turn out well. And anyone who calls himself Republican certainly ought to know better.

But, i guess you can buy em books and buy em books. Here we go again.  **nononono*

I f you know the taxing is the cause, then attack that cause, @Bigun. Don't put further weight on our businesses and give them no alternative.

You think you can MAKE THEM come back. Well you can't. anything you do to increase pressure on business is going to make them go elsewhere, where the pressure is less and the profit is better.

FIX THE WHY, and make America competitive, so they want to come back. So they will come back on their own. You sure as hell ain't getting em back by rubbing their noses in it when it ain't their sh*t on the floor.

This is just flat dumb.  **nononono*

Wait. It DOES suck. Especially for business. That's not wrong.
What's wrong is the fix.
And they damn well should know it. Know it in their bones.
It is astonishing that they don't.

You may have a point.  We did export a heck of a lot of bombs to Germany and Japan in the 1940s.

Seriously though, this might put it into perspective:

US Trade Balance as Percentage of GDP

Those Coolidge years don't look so good compared to Wilson.  Which essentially proves that trade deficits don't matter. So if trade balance equity is your goal, then you're looking at the wrong thing.  The goal should ALWAYS be the creation of wealth.  Always.

US Real GDP

In 1971, we dumped high tariffs.  And our economy has never looked back.  I'll take 'growth' over 'envy'

I display the Confederate Battle Flag in honor of my great great great grandfathers who spilled blood at Wilson's Creek and Shiloh.  5 others served in the WBTS with honor too.
