You think that Jeffrey Goldberg got added to a high-level national security conversation by chance? Maybe you thought Covid was from the wet market and not from the lab that was right there and contained Covid-like viruses.

The chance that this was done by an operative looking to embarrass the administration is about 90 per cent. The chance someone added him because they were looking for another Jeffrey is about 10 per cent.

This was a security breach but most likely one by a partisan trying to undermine the administration than by the participants on the chain. I’m not a conspiracy theorist — I just play the odds and the odds it was an innocent mistake are low and deliberate act are high. Of course, though, I’m waiting for the final answer.

The Atlantic published Wednesday what it described as the "attack plans" at the center of a Signal text chain leak involving senior officials in the Trump administration.

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and national security adviser Mike Waltz have faced calls to resign following revelations that the outlet's editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg was inadvertently added to a private group chat earlier this month in which Hegseth, Waltz, Vice President JD Vance and other top administration officials reportedly discussed impending airstrikes on Yemen's Houthi rebels. Hegseth has said "nobody was texting war plans."

"TEAM UPDATE:TIME NOW (1144et): Weather is FAVORABLE. Just CONFIRMED w/CENTCOM we are a GO for mission launch. 1215et: F-18s LAUNCH (1st strike package). 1345: ‘Trigger Based’ F-18 1st Strike Window Starts (Target Terrorist is @ his Known Location so SHOULD BE ON TIME – also, Strike Drones Launch (MQ-9s)," Hegseth apparently wrote in a screenshot of a text message released Wednesday by The Atlantic.

White House Deputy Chief of Staff Taylor Budowich responded to the report on Wednesday by saying "The Atlantic has already abandoned their bulls--- ‘war plans’ narrative, and in releasing the full chat , they concede they LIED to perpetuate yet ANOTHER hoax on the American people. What scumbags!"

 Atlantic publishes more ‘war plan’ Signal texts including minute-by-minute details and weapons to use in Yemen strikes

The Atlantic magazine on Wednesday published even more “war plan” texts, laying out minute-by-minute operational details and exact weapons to be used in the Yemen strikes — after the Trump administration shot down claims that classified details were ever shared in the bombshell Signal chat snafu.

The mag’s top editor, Jeffrey Goldberg, published additional snippets of the text exchange that he says revealed the precise operational details of the March 15 bombing of the Houthi terror group in Yemen.


 “The Houthis would have had time to prepare for what was meant to be a surprise attack on their strongholds” if the texts were “received by someone hostile to American interests,” Atlantic editor Jeffrey Goldberg wrote.

Hegseth continued to inform the group chat of the play-by-play, writing that at 2:10 p.m., “more F-18s LAUNCH (2nd strike package).”

“1415: Strike Drones on Target (THIS IS WHEN THE FIRST BOMBS WILL DEFINITELY DROP, pending earlier ‘Trigger Based’ targets),” he wrote.

“1536 F-18 2nd Strike Starts – also, first sea-based Tomahawks launched.”

“MORE TO FOLLOW (per timeline),” Hegseth continued, before adding “Godspeed to our Warriors.”

Then, at 1:48 p.m., Goldberg said he received a text from Trump’s national security adviser, Mike Waltz, relaying real-time intelligence from the attack site.

It's not war plans. It's not classified info.

That's what I speculated. This was more spitballing than anything else, and therefore inconsequential. War plans actually discuss the precise locations and timetable of bombing operations, I should think.

Yesterday's kerfuffle over the latest Jeffrey Goldberg/Atlantic hit piece proves yet again to never react to leftist attack pieces unless and until the facts are known.

It appears now that the following things are likely true:

1. White House counsel approved the use of Signal for non-classified discussions.
2. The phones the principals used had Signal pre-loaded when issued to them.
3. The Biden Administration used Signal in the exact same way.
4. The conversations Goldberg shared in his Atlantic piece were not classified.
5. Those same conversations discussed how to share classified information separately on classified IT system.
6. Literally the only proof we have that any classified discussions occurred is Goldberg's assertion that the parts of the conversation he withheld from the article were "conceivably" classified.
7. Goldberg is a highly unreliable narrator who has created or participated in multiple wildly inaccurate anti-Trump hoaxes.
8. There are ways to illegally hack Signal which involve cloning a device that is legitimately involved in the conversation.  An in-house IT employee could do this with ease as that functionality is purposely built into Signal for user convenience.

Based on the above, my current working theory (yes, it's a THEORY and it could be wrong) is that the Biden White House left a hacker landmine in the system where the very last person who can be trusted with anything involving Trump was invited to a crucial national security discussion.

Illegal?  Unethical?  Yes.

But so is firebombing Tesla dealerships and fabricating "dossiers" about pee tapes.

Here's all you need to know about Jeffrey Goldberg.

If SignalGate had happened exactly the way it did, except it was the Biden Administration on the chat, Atlantic would never have run an article and none of us would even be aware of it.

Later in the day, I saw Walz and he indicated that the number for Goldberg was actually tied to a different name in Walz's directory.  So perhaps there is some shinanigans going on.

Still, our top folks should be better protected from hijinks that compromise them.  Clearly system folks are dropping the ball working for the federal government.

Waters last night speculated that Goldberg may have catfished him.  (no relation). If so, doing that on government servers might end up being some level of felony of fraud.  He might need to lawyer up.

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard on Tuesday told the Senate Intelligence Committee that classified information was not revealed in a group chat among top Trump administration officials and a journalist mistakenly included in the conversation about U.S. plans to launch air strikes on Houthi rebels in Yemen.
 
"There was no classified material that was shared in that signal chat," Gabbard said in response to questions by committee Vice Chairman Sen. Mark Warner, a Virginia Democrat.

Gabbard was reportedly on the March 15 group chat on the encrypted messaging app Signal that took place about two hours before the strike. 

However, she declined to say at the hearing whether she participated.
