If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.     -Dwight Eisenhower-

Russia’s 70-Year-Old Assault Trucks Got Wiped Out In Eastern Ukraine

Drones swarmed the museum-grade GAZ-69 trucks. All along the front line, vehicle losses are spurring a swift de-mechanization of the Russian army.

David Axe  |  Apr 10, 2025  |  04:40pm EDT

A few weeks after first appearing in significant numbers along the front line in Ukraine, Russian GAZ-69 trucks—museum pieces from the 1950s—seem to have participated in their first direct assault on Ukrainian positions.

“We are an inch away from the GAZ-69 sturm,” open-source intelligence analyst Moklasen predicted on April 1, using slang for “attack.” They were right.

The Thursday assault outside Bilohorivka, at the juncture of Luhansk and Donetsk Oblasts in eastern Ukraine, ended badly for at least one of the 3,500-pound, four-wheel-drive GAZ-69s, which rolled off the assembly line at the Molotov plant in Moscow some time between 1952 and 1972.

The trucks are totally unarmored except for the anti-drone cages some Russian troops weld onto them.

The GAZ-69 was struck by a first-person-view drone from the Ukrainian Abwehr Gruppe drone team, part of the 81st Air Mobile Brigade. The rest of the civilian-style vehicles in the platoon-sized column—potentially including additional GAZ-69s—also came under attack.

“No one arrived, no one reached” Ukrainian positions, the Abwehr Gruppe reported.  .  .  .

Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, April 10, 2025

Excerpts:

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated on April 9 that Ukraine is interested in purchasing a large package of weapons from the United States, possibly within the framework of a future US-Ukraine mineral deal, as part of Ukrainian efforts to obtain security guarantees that would deter a future Russian invasion.

Russia is reportedly using social media and financial incentives to recruit Chinese nationals to voluntarily join the Russian military. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated on April 9 that Ukrainian authorities have identified 155 Chinese citizens fighting with Russian forces in Ukraine but that there are likely many more.

The Kremlin continues to use narratives it has historically used against Ukraine to set conditions to justify possible future aggression against Estonia. Russian MFA Spokesperson Maria Zakharova accused Estonia of conducting a “hunt” against Orthodoxy, and the MFA amplified the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) Holy Synod’s accusations of Estonia’s persecution and oppression against Orthodox followers.

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty’s Systema project provided details on relatively elite Russian Storm-Z units comprised of penal recruits that have fought in Ukraine. Systema reported on April 9 that the Russian MoD formed three experimental elite assault units from former penal recruits: the “Storm Gladiator” detachment (58th Combined Arms Army [CAA], Southern Military District [SMD]), the “Akula” detachment, and the “Chernye Bushlaty” detachment.

Reporting From Ukraine:
https://www.youtube.com/@RFU/videos

Excerpts from the video transcript:

[ Russians Hunt Down Deserters Who Tried to Run Away During The Operation ]

Today [ Apr 10, 8 pm ], there is interesting news from the Lyman direction. Russian commanders again resorted to one of their favorite and most brutal tactics, employing drone barrier troops to continue the offensive, after their soldiers’ morale had already broken. They did this to instill fear and obedience in their soldiers, in preparation for a renewed push toward Lyman, building up for what could become one of the most brutal offensives of the war. The Russian strategic goal is to break through Ukrainian lines along the Zherebets River, take control of the area between Zherebets and the Oskil Rivers, and move to sever Ukrainian ground lines of communication ... Russian command seems to be laying the groundwork for a massive, multi-directional offensive that could put Ukrainian defenses under severe pressure ...The Zherebets River here widens considerably, due to nearby water reservoirs, creating natural bottlenecks that funnel Russian forces into narrow kill zones. Ukrainian defenders have turned these chokepoints into death traps using drones, tanks, and artillery, waiting for the precise moment to strike the enemy, when they are most vulnerable. Meanwhile, from the south, the dense Serebryanski forest has given Ukrainian units a major advantage for months.

Utilizing drones and artillery from within the forest allowed the Ukrainians to create a death zone for all Russian units advancing toward Torske, striking them before they could even establish a proper foothold, making any progress impossible ... Drones have recorded wave after wave of Russian infantry being wiped out by Ukrainian FPV strikes, and the bodies of soldiers are piling up near the crossings. Despite this, Ukraine’s 63rd Brigade recently intercepted communications between Russian units near Lyman that revealed a disturbing new layer to these tactics. The recordings proved that Russian commanders are using barrier troops to keep soldiers from retreating. The intercepted message stated that if Russian assault troops, consisting mainly of newly mobilized soldiers, without experience, retreat or hesitate during an assault, their comrades will target them with drones from behind. The Russians in the recording also stated that the order comes straight from Russian high command

It’s a reflection of just how desperate Russian command has become to maintain momentum, regardless of the cost in lives or morale. It also underscores the growing reliance on untrained, poorly motivated mobilized troops, who must now fear not only the enemy, but their own forces as well ... Through sheer numbers and forced compliance, some marginal ground was gained at an enormous human cost, but in the eyes of the Russian leadership, any movement forward, even over mountains of bodies, counts as progress ... with such attritional human wave assaults, the Russian command is effectively undermining its own summer offensive plans, as they are exhausting their manpower resources and risk having no critical buildup of reserves needed for a breakthrough.

Russian soldiers resort to eating dogs amid severe food shortages on Ukraine front lines

A pair of intercepted phone calls released by Kyiv have laid bare the desperate plight of Russian troops on the front lines of the war in Ukraine

Ciaran McGrath & Hannah Broughton  |  Apr 11, 2025  |  05:52 ET

Kyiv has released an intercepted phone call suggesting Russian soldiers are resorting to desperate measures for survival on the Ukrainian front lines, including consuming dogs and flu medication. The recording, shared by Ukraine's military intelligence agency HUR, features a woman recounting the grim situation of Russian troops known to her, left without supplies in a dugout for over two weeks.

The woman is heard saying: "They've been sitting in a dugout for two weeks, the food ran out. They ate whatever they had. They even ate Theraflu, Mom."

This conversation adds to a growing number of similar recordings that expose the Kremlin's apparent disregard for the welfare of its forces. She mentions several men - "Vanya, Dima and Seryozha" - who are stuck in a trench, cut off from movement or resupply, with Russian commanders neglecting to provide essential support  .  .  .

I don't think this is what Pavlov had in mind.

Russian victory or massacre? What really happened in the Kursk pipeline

Ukraine claims enemy troops who took part in Sudzha attack were not heroes, but victims of poor military planning

Russian troops reportedly spent days crawling through gas pipeline to slip behind Ukrainian lines in Kursk region Credit: Sergey Kolyasnikov

For two days, oxygen-starved Russian troops crawled nine miles through a pitch-black underground pipeline, creeping behind enemy lines and springing a surprise attack that wiped out the enemy in a blaze of bullets.

The Ukrainian soldiers had no idea that Operation Potok was coming.

Hundreds of men streamed out of the pipeline, storming Ukrainian positions north of Sudzha, pushing them back out of Russia in a triumphant counter-offensive to save the motherland.

It was Russia’s elite forces who “burst out unexpectedly, like demons – black, dirty, and exhausted”, according to a soldier with the call sign “Mowgli”.

This is the story the Kremlin spun. The “soldiers from the pipe” became the stuff of legend, and those who returned were welcomed home as war heroes.

“Blow up all your pipes out of fear... we’ll still come to you from under the ground,” goes a new song about the mission, first performed outside a church in central Russia, where a 50ft replica had been installed for people to admire.

The story that Ukraine’s military told was completely different, however. The raid, they said, became a massacre – the Russians that took part were not heroes, but victims of poor and careless military planning. And they saw them coming.

The truth, according to analysts, military bloggers and those involved, is more nuanced.  .  .  .

Russia may “step up their assault” on Kupiansk axis this month

Yelizaveta Diachenko  |  11 April 2025  |  14:59

UKRAINE, KHARKIV OBLAST, Apr 11 — Russia may intensify its offensive in Kupiansk direction in April and May, the deputy head of Ukraine’s Presidential Office, Pavlo Palisa, said in an interview with Reuters.

Previously, Oleksandr Syrskyi, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, reported that the Russian army had already started its spring offensive in the Sumy and Kharkiv directions.

In Palisa’s opinion, Russian troops concentrate their resources near Pokrovsk city, but they can also intensify the assaults on Kupiansk, Lyman, Zaporizhzhia, and Novopavlivka axes. He emphasized the importance of security guarantees from Kyiv’s U.S. and European partners to help deter Russian offense.

Reuters journalists said that Ukraine is uncertain about future military help from the USA and the ways the lack of it could impact the supply of missiles for anti-aircraft warfare and artillery systems such as Patriot, HIMARS, and ATACMS, which Ukraine needs  .  .  .

Actually, the UKR troops had see this tactic before and were waiting for them - when they emerged, the UKR blew the tunnel and killed the 100 or so that had emerged.

Russian Army Ads Are Luring Chinese Nationals With Promises of $27,000 to Join War in Ukraine

Amira Barkhush  |  Apr 11, 2025  |  09:40

Russia is reportedly using Chinese social media to spread propaganda aimed at recruiting Chinese citizens to fight in its war against Ukraine. The Guardian reported this on April 10, after reviewing and analyzing several such videos.

Numerous recruitment videos were found by the agency on Chinese social media, all highlighting generous pay as a major incentive—sign-on bonuses ranging from 60,000 to 200,000 RMB ($8,200 to $27,300) and monthly salaries of around 18,000 RMB ($2,400).

One video, which has racked up hundreds of thousands of views across various platforms, appears to be a Russian military recruitment ad with Chinese subtitles. It shows Caucasian men leaving their day jobs to join the war, accompanied by a message to viewers: “Do you want to show your strength here? Is this the path you’ve been longing for? You’re a tough man, be like them!”

In another video, a Russian influencer speaks to her more than 300,000 followers in Chinese, promoting the financial perks of joining the Russian army. She highlights sign-up bonuses, monthly payments from the Russian government and military, as well as benefits like housing, healthcare, and childcare support.

“Trained by experienced coaches, equipped with the best professional equipment. In Moscow, anyone under 60 years old can sign up, regardless of whether they have served in foreign military service.  .  .  .

Russia is killing civilians in Ukraine while claiming it wants peace: UK statement to the OSCE

Ambassador Holland condemns Russia's 4th April attack on Kryvyi Rih in Ukraine, which killed 20 civilians, including 9 children. If Russia wanted peace it would end these barbaric attacks and commit to an immediate ceasefire.

Ambassador Holland  |  8 April 2025 (Transcript)

Thank you, Mister Chair.  We find ourselves here once again to condemn yet another Russian attack that has killed and injured multiple Ukrainian civilians.  As we have heard from the Ukrainian Ambassador, Friday’s missile attack on Kryvyi Rih resulted in the deaths of 20 people, including nine children; a further 70 people were injured.  The youngest victim was just three years old. Our thoughts and sympathies are with the families and loved ones of those affected.

The Kremlin claims that it is serious about peace.  It has been given an opportunity to demonstrate this by signing up to a ceasefire on equal terms.  Not only has it dithered and delayed over President Trump’s proposal, its continued barbaric attacks on Ukraine run entirely counter to President Putin’s stated desire for peace.

Hitting residential areas with missiles is not a sign of wanting peace.  Killing children is not a sign of wanting peace.  And increasing the number of aerial attacks on Ukrainian civilians, including cities far away from the front line, is not a sign of wanting peace.

Friday’s attack was a dark chapter in this already senseless war.  But it was not an isolated one.  It sits alongside the missile strike on the Okhmatdyt children’s hospital, the mass civilian casualties caused by the destruction of the supermarket in Kostiantynivka, the massacre in Bucha and many others.  Every civilian death in this war is a tragedy.  We call on Russia to end these barbaric attacks and commit to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, as Ukraine has done.

The United Kingdom, alongside our partners and allies, will continue to provide Ukraine with the military support it needs to defend its citizens.  And we stand ready to apply further pressure on Russia using all of the tools at our disposal to hinder its ability to wage this war of aggression.

Thank you, Mister Chair.
