CNN  —

The Trump administration and Department of Government Efficiency are proposing a dramatic downsizing of the IRS that would result in a nearly 20% reduction of its workforce by May 15 — one month after Tax Day in the United States.

President Donald Trump has ordered agencies across the federal government to turn in their “large scale” layoff plans — known as Reduction in Force, or RIF — by Thursday.

The details of the IRS proposal have been laid out in an email from DOGE and will be discussed at a meeting among agency leadership Thursday morning, according to a source familiar with the matter who asked to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation. The proposal has not been made public.

The latest round of layoffs would terminate nearly 6,800 employees — on top of about 6,700 probationary employees who have already been fired and 4,700 employees who took the “voluntary buyout” known as the “Fork in the Road” program from the Trump administration. Probationary employees are hires who generally have have been on the job for less than a year.

It’s unclear how many of the roughly 6,700 fired probationary employees will be reinstated as a result of a major court ruling Thursday, which ordered the Trump administration to bring back probationary workers that were terminated from six federal agencies, including the Treasury Department, the IRS’ parent agency.

Trump Administration to Modernize IRS, Make Agency ‘Most Efficient and Effective’ for Taxpayers

Sean Moran 14 Mar 2025

The Trump administration is moving to modernize the Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) technologies to have it better serve the American taxpayer.

A senior career tech executive at the IRS explained during a press conference call that the agency needs to be “modern and effective to provide the best service to our taxpayers.”

The senior executive at the IRS said the agency would pursue a “strategic pause” to better modernize the agency and ensure the agency operates in a “manner that is most efficient and effective for our taxpayers.”

“Over the last several weeks, we have been heavily involved in doing just that behind the scenes. Filing Season has continued, as has been signed and from a technology and strategic perspective, our filing season continues to accept our technology, continues to accept returns and send out payments without any significant issues,” the executive said, explaining that the IRS has continued to operate as normal while it looks at how to make the agency more efficient.

The senior tech executive at the IRS said the agency’s Direct File is also under review, which allows Americans to file their taxes directly with the agency without the help of third-party companies such as TurboTax or H&R Block.

The executive said there are “enormous opportunities” to be exploited in regard to the processing of taxpayer review with the revamping of the IRS’s technologies.

Is this 20% haircut before or after the hiring of 87,000 new agents?

If after, we need a lot more cutting going on.....

It's akin to doubling price of clothing then advertising it to be a 20% off sale
