Government Shutdown Likely As Senate Dems Position To Block Funding Bill

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) announced Wednesday that Democrats will not support the House-passed bill to fund the federal government through September, all but ensuring a partial government shutdown when the deadline expires at midnight this Friday.

The House passed the Trump-backed funding bill, a short-term stopgap known as a “continuing resolution,” largely along party lines on Tuesday. Every Republican with the exception of Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) voted in favor of the bill, while Rep. Jared Golden (D-ME) was the lone Democrat crossover vote.

While Republicans hold a three-seat majority in the Senate, they would need support from Democrats in order to cross the 60-vote cloture threshold. Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) has signaled his opposition to the bill, meaning that eight Senate Democrats would need to vote “yes” in order to avoid a partial government shutdown.

“For years, House Democrats have railed against government shutdowns, but they suddenly changed their tune when President Trump returned to office. Their falsehoods and misinformation campaigns are a desperate attempt to distract from their own failures,” House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) said after the successful House vote.

The House speaker concluded his post by noting that Democrats will own a government shutdown if Senate members opt not to come through. “Now it’s decision time for Senate Democrats: cast a vote to keep the government open or be responsible for shutting it down,” Johnson said.

Since he is unpaid for his work, and likely footing the bill for Big Ballz, and others.....  I am guessing not.    But thinking about it, it would be the perfect time to do their research and analysis  while Fedzilla  offices are empty.

Report: Chuck Schumer Prepares to Cave on Government Funding, Only Talked Tough ‘to Save Face’

Senate Democrats have boxed themselves into a corner, and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is trying to slip out.

Schumer announced Wednesday afternoon that Democrats would reject a House-passed government plan to keep the government funded past the Friday deadline through the end of the fiscal year, September 30.

President Donald Trump and his administration went all-in to ensure the bill received majority support in the House Tuesday, the first major test this Congress for Trump and his legislative team.

But in the Senate, although Republicans hold a majority with 53 seats, Majority Leader John Thune (R-SC) needs 60 votes to advance the legislation.

“Funding the government should be a bipartisan effort, but Republicans chose a partisan path, drafting their continuing resolution without any input — any input — from congressional Democrats,” Schumer said on the Senate floor. “Because of that, Republicans do not have the votes in the Senate to invoke cloture on the House CR.”

However, only one day before government funding lapses, Schumer is relenting to reality — Trump and Republicans hold all the cards, and Democrats have a lot to lose by gambling with shutdown politics.

The Hill reports that Senate Democrats are giving private assurances they will not allow a government shutdown, despite the activist wing with its growing chokehold over the party demanding further resistance to Trump.

The report says despite Schumer insisting on an amendment vote on a shorter-term CR to give appropriators more time to negotiate a massive omnibus bill, he is giving his “centrists” space to vote to end debate and proceed to final passage.

Citing Democrats familiar with internal deliberations, The Hill reports Schumer’s Wednesday positioning against the CR was a maneuver “designed to save face.”

What's funny is the Dims are providing cover for any claims of delayed government services due to spending cuts. Now everything can be blamed on the "shutdown" that the Dims instigated.

Senate Democrats face major dilemma: help GOP pass funding bill or trigger shutdown

Senate Democrats must decide between blocking a spending measure many in their party have described as a blank check for President Trump — or backing the plan in order to avoid a government shutdown.

Democrats huddled behind closed doors Thursday afternoon to debate their plans ahead of a critical vote on whether to move forward on House-passed spending bill to fund the government through the end of September. They have until the end of Friday to avoid a shutdown and the rapidly approaching deadline gives them few options.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., blamed Senate Minority leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., for the creating the bind Democrats face and called on Democrats to make a decision on how they will proceed.

"It's time for Democrats to fish or cut bait," Thune said in a speech on the Senate floor. "We have two days until government funding expires. And Democrats need to decide if they're going to support funding legislation that came over from the House, or if they're going to shut down the government."

Thune said the House-passed spending bill is the best option available at this moment.

The party's base is demanding they fight President Trump and Elon Musk's rapid fire cuts to the federal workforce and block the funding bill that was crafted without Democratic input.

But Democrats say it is not that simple. Some worry about the unpredictable impact and length of a shutdown, and what the plan would be to get out of one. Also weighing on Democrats hoping to regain control of at least one chamber of Congress is 2026 is the political impact. Republicans control the House, Senate and White House, but Trump has a large microphone and Senate Democrats will end up determining what happens.................

In large part, the Dems look so bad, and they know it, they are literally cast in the middle of a desert, miles away from safety, and they have no idea which direction to head in for survival.  They are lost.

Trump knows it.  But this situation will not last long.  Eventually, they will pull their heads out of their posterior to become functional again.  Maybe.

I'm not sure the true believers of the party will allow them to do that. It will be hard Left or nothing. If they don't get what they want they'll then burn it down.
