Trump's steamroller crushes BBC's climate crystal ball
By Charles Rotter.
Six weeks ago, the BBC's climate forecasters looked ahead to 2025 with their signature mix of gloom and green idealism. Their January 7 piece, "From Trump to a 'Game-Changing' Lawsuit: Seven Big Climate and Nature Moments in 2025," outlined a year of U.N. lawsuits, lofty carbon targets, and world summits — all poised to "put the spin on warming."
They looked nervously at Trump's return, suggesting that his departure from Paris could "impede climate action," but counted on technocrats and NGOs to preserve the faith. Then the Trump steamroller kicked in and made their predictions obsolete in less than two months. Now, with NGOs in their sights, the rubble is still smoking. What a difference six weeks make.
However, some experts say that momentum is now on the side of the energy transition, despite all the actions Trump will take.
"The result of this election will be seen as a major blow to global climate action," Christiana Figueres, former UN climate chief, told the BBC in November .” But it cannot and will not stop the changes that are underway to decarbonize the economy and meet the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement."
