What a relief that would be, but the influx of people moving to this state would explode, which is something that I really don't want to see.

Abolish property taxes? DeSantis endorses the idea and explains how it could be done in Florida

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis endorsed the idea of abolishing property taxes throughout the Sunshine State, but explained that it would require a constitutional amendment.

The governor, who is currently serving his second term after a decisive re-election victory in Florida's 2022 gubernatorial contest, was responding to someone on X who advocated abolishing property taxes in the state and asked what would need to be done to make that happen.

"Property taxes are local, not state. So we’d need to do a constitutional amendment (requires 60% of voters to approve) to eliminate them (which I would support) or even to reform/lower them," DeSantis noted............

This should get very wide support. If it passes, I’m paying my mortgage off immediately.

This will be my first single-issue vote ever. They who support this will get my vote.

I'd be for it, and I haven't looked into it yet, if it applies only to owners with Homestead exemptions.  People who have "investment" prop or slum lords...no

I agree with you; those that actually own and live in their homes with Homestead exemptions, I'd be all for it.  Those who rent out properties - no!  A lot of investors with rental properties don't even live in FL, so why should they get a break on FL property taxes??

That I believe is the intention.

It seems unlikely that an important revenue source could be abolished.  DeSantis may have better luck expanding the homestead exemption.

I would accept that also.  An increase from 25k to say....100K?

I am retired.

Why should I continue to pay rent on property I own?

Anyone over 65 should pay no real estate taxes on their homestead.

It would certainly help me.

For me it would off-set my HO insurance premium increases.

Banning property taxes plus passing a US Constitutional Amendment protecting property rights is what's called for here.

Because even if you ban property taxes the feckless Democrats will certainly come up with other ways to tax property unless property rights are defined and put beyond the reach of the Marxists.
