Trump reveals he doesn’t view JD Vance as his successor in 2028: ‘No, but he’s very capable’

WASHINGTON — President Trump says it’s too early to know if he will anoint Vice President JD Vance as his successor in 2028.

Fox News anchor Bret Baier asked Trump, 78, in an interview taped ahead of Sunday’s Super Bowl, “Do you view Vice President JD Vance as your successor, the Republican nominee in 2028?”

“No, but he’s very capable,” Trump replied.

“I think you have a lot of very capable people. So far I think he’s doing a fantastic job. It’s too early. We’re just starting.”

Baier interjected, “By the time we get to get to the midterms, [Vance] is going to be looking for an endorsement.”

“A lot of people have said that this has been the greatest opening — almost three weeks — in the history of the presidency,” Trump deflected.

It’s possible that Trump chose not to endorse Vance as his successor to avoid calling attention to the fact that he is constitutionally obligated to leave office when he completes his second term in January 2029.

Trump frequently muses about changing the Constitution to serve a third term, but that’s understood partially as a way to avoid “lameduck” status that could sap his political power.

Because Trump gotta be Trump, can’t have a situation where Vance gets attention Trump sees as his alone.

He could have said, "It’s too early," and just left it at that.

I was quite surprised by that comment as well.  Yes, he could have just left it at "well he's very capable", or "it's very early and too soon to tell", followed by "he's extremely capable and is doing a great job".

Talk about a punch in the gut to J.D., the only other thing that I can think of is, he doesn't want them going after J.D. like they went after him???

There is such a stark contrast between do-nothing Pence vs. hands-on Vance.  There's just no comparison.

Secondly, it's not up to Trump who is successor is.  It is up to "We the People".  Considering what we've seen so far of Vance, I'd say he has a pretty good shot at the presidency.

Just my opinion.

With impeachment already on the table, the last thing Trump wants to embrace is a worthy, likely successor  888blackhat

  • I was a "conspiracy theorist". Now I'm just right.

Me, too. Otherwise, they will redouble their efforts to find/create some dirt on J.D. and poison that well long before 2028.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Oh for heaven's sake, you couldn't be more wrong if you actually tried.   Timing is everything.....the mid-terms need a strong Trump and united party.

Vance will be elevated after the mid-terms when the 2028 election cycle begins.
