This part I get.  The Art of the Deal, and all that.  What I don't get is that Trump already negotiated all this when he was in office before.  Mexico and Canada did exactly what Trump demanded and signed on the dotted line.  Except now, Trump says there is a problem with that deal, and that he's putting tariffs in place in order to make them do something above and beyond what was already agreed.

My guess is, particularly with Mexico, is that they greatly aided the invasion of our borders. That they needed a reality check to get them back in line.

  • Well EXCUSE me!
History reflects that.  But we all know that the reason tariffs always failed in the past is because we didn't have the right people in charge running it.
Wait…what? That sounds exactly like what the communists say about communism failing.

Did I misread what you wrote or are my comprehension skills just much worse than I thought?

Biden rescinded most if no all of the Trump policies with Mexico.

Talking out your @$$ again I see. Tarriffs have zero effect on those who do not purchase foreign made products. Maybe bringing our manufacturing base back home would be a REALLY good thing. I, for one, know it would. Papa Bush can take his "NEW WORLD ORDER"  BS and shove it!

@Timber Rattler is right, and you are stone dead wrong on this, @Bigun

You have *very little* that is not effected by imports. Nearly literally nothing. You may drive a Ford or a Chevy, but much of that truck, from subcomponents all the way down to fasteners, are very much imported products.

And it is never a good idea to promote protectionism. NEVER. Using tariffs to protect an industry temporarily (like Reagan did for Harley) might be marginally acceptable, but even that should leave a bad taste in your mouth.

Tariffs are a tax on goods when we are already taxed to damn much. If you want business to come home, the only remedy is to compete, not protect. Do it better, for a better profit, and the business will come to you. That is the only way.

That's precisely what he meant to imply, I'd bet... Protectionism is a very liberal action. Very akin to what communists do. And protectionism is in no way Conservative.

Yet here y'all (all y'all) are, whoopin and hollerin... Like you're winning...
But what you've done is that you've sold your soul.

Catch up! Both of you.

Well this whole thread is now moot.  Thanks for playing.  No soup for you.

This tariff nonsense is now small beans versus what is about to be uncovered with USAID.  Put your seatbelt on.

Yes. The thread is dominated by a topic that ended up not being the point of the tariffs, which I think were not going to be permanent.  They did convince Mexico and Canada to do something.

Yep, the Bidens cashed some of the checks.

But who else did?

It is how it was defended on these pages - THAT is what's on point.

Not only were they not permanent, they never existed in the first place
