Trump warns Canada, Mexico tariffs are coming on Saturday
by Brett Samuels - 01/30/25 4:25 PM ET

President Trump on Thursday said he plans to follow through on Saturday on his threat to impose 25 percent tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada.

“We’ll be announcing the tariffs on Canada and Mexico for a number of reasons,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. He cited the influx of migrants at the southern border, the flow of fentanyl into the United States and the trade deficit the U.S. has with its neighbors.

“I’ll be putting the tariff of 25 percent on Canada and Mexico, and we will really have to do that because we have very big deficits with those countries,” he said. “Those tariffs may or may not rise with time.”

Trump added that he would decide Thursday night whether to include oil among the items subject to tariffs.

“We may or may not. We’re going to make that determination, probably tonight, on oil. Because they send us oil, we’ll see. It depends on what the price is. If the oil is properly priced, if they treat us properly, which they don’t,” Trump said.

“Look, Mexico and Canada have never been good to us on trade,” he continued. “They’ve treated us very unfairly on trade, and we will be able to make that up very quickly because we don’t need the products that they have.”

I'm not sure about recently, but when I lived in Canada for 13 1/2 months back in the late '80's the combaination for price differences (everything was more expensive in Canada) and tariffs against American imports were such that we, like the Canadians, resorted to smuggling goods in from the US to get the cheaper price and avoid paying the tariff.

The trouble with Trump's ideas in this regard is that tariffs raise prices paid by the citizens of the country imposing them (which is one reason why, Canada, a high tariff country in the '80's had higher prices than the US).  They may address trade imbalances, but they will do so by reducing imports to the US, and raising prices for US consumers.  I am grimly amused by the fact that blanket tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico will raise the prices of American branded cars, the supply chains for which run through Canada and Mexico (to say nothing of some models being assembled in Canada or Mexico).

His penchant for tariffs shows a lack of understanding of economics that rivals even left's nearly universal lack of understanding, and while he wants to address some real problems using them, that is another example of what seems to be Trump's pattern: brilliant, incisive identification of problems facing America that others don't want to even talk about, coupled with really dumbass proposed solutions.  There are exceptions -- crushing DEI and abolishing all support for transgender ideology is the absolutely correct solution to those problems -- but on so many other issues, great analysis of the problem, really stupid proposed solution has been the pattern.
And when they behead your own people in the wars which are to come, then you will know what this was all about.

My guess, and it is only a guess, is that Trump is trying shock treatment on Canada and Mexico to see how much they'll give in on their unfair trade practices and lax border enforcement. The next week will tell the tale.

Regarding China, Trump needs China to stop supporting Russia economically and if China moves away from Russia Trump will likely reward them. So a lot is at play and where it all lands is really hard to say.

Sen. Susan Collins
@SenatorCollins
The Maine economy is integrated with Canada, our most important trading partner. Certain tariffs will impose a significant burden on many families, manufacturers, the forest products industry, small businesses, lobstermen, and agricultural producers.

For example, 95 percent of the heating oil used by most Mainers to heat their homes comes from refineries in Canada. The Air National Guard Base in Bangor depends completely on jet fuel and diesel from Canada. From fisheries to potato farmers to paper mills, these tariffs will have a significant impact on Maine’s economy and risk increasing costs for our residents.

I am working with the Trump Administration to help its officials better understand the potential ramifications of certain tariffs on Maine and to find out more about their implementation, scope, duration, and other important information, including any exemptions they may make for northern border states, certain industries, agricultural producers, and others who rely on trade with Canada.

Tell Collins to tell her governor (Maine) to subsidize Canada.

U.S. consumers are tired of it.

great analysis of the problem, really stupid proposed solution has been the pattern

When the US starts adding 25% tariffs to imported items, who do you think will end up paying that extra tax? The importing companies won't be eating it, they'll be passing it along to US consumers.

Similarly, US goods coming into Canada will now have a 25% counter-vailing duty placed on them, while European and Asian goods don't ... guess what Canadian consumers will buy?

Until the 1980s, tariffs WERE in place in both countries, and multiple economists pointed out how they were stifling trade ...

guess the same hard lessons have to be re-learned again ...

I think they're more likely playing chicken to bring down barriers in Canada and for Canada to better secure its borders. We'll see. Whatever happens I don't think it will last long because someone will flinch.

Americans pay the tariff only if they buy the product that have the tariff on it. If other sources are only marginally more expense the price of those items won't increase much while the sales of those Canadian products will plummet.

Trudeau Warns Canada Will Respond to Trade Tariffs from U.S. with ‘Forceful, Immediate Response’

Elizabeth Weibel 31 Jan 2025

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau warned that if the United States imposes tariffs on goods from Canada, Canada is ready to respond “with a forceful and immediate response.”

Trudeau revealed that he had met with the Canada-U.S. Council and that they were “working hard” in order to prevent tariffs on goods from Canada. Trudeau’s response comes after President Donald Trump warned that 25 percent tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico would start on Saturday.

“No one — on either side of the border — wants to see American tariffs on Canadian goods,” Trudeau said. “I met with our Canada-U.S. Council today. We’re working hard to prevent these tariffs, but if the United States moves ahead, Canada’s ready with a forceful and immediate response.”

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt recently confirmed that Canada and Mexico would face 25 percent tariffs on goods coming into the country, while China would face a ten percent tariff on imports.

“These nations have all enabled illegal drugs to pour into America,” Leavitt explained. “The amount of fentanyl seized at the southern border in recent years alone has the potential to kill tens of millions of Americans, and so the president is intent on taking action.”

In a lot of cases, you don't have a choice

e.g. - Maine gets its gas from New Brunswick (Canada). Why?

Because the NB refinery is closer, and the Boston refineries are already at full capacity, so there is no other choice

If nothing else comes out of this, at least we'll all get a better understanding of the complexities of Canada-US trade!

The ONLY reason that this situation exists is because Maine chooses not to take care of itself.  Plenty of shoreline and harbors to build its own refinery.

Refinery workers are well-paid and Maine residents would enjoy more higher paid jobs like that rather than working a lobster trap

Most of the growers up here picked early.  Today at our Farmers Market I picked up a mess of grapefruit for a buck a piece.  They are close to 2 bucks in the stores.

The net effect of these tariffs will be less consumption of foreign made products in the USA and more consumption of domestically produced things. Let me know what part of that you object to?

A good idea in theory ... BUT it should only have been between Canada and the US, because we're so similar in economy, corporate culture, and wages
