That's interesting. I was having a problem understanding why the renaming was an issue. If this is true, it makes sense.

"Biden suspended oil and gas drilling in the Gulf of Mexico"

This will have no impact on oil and gas drilling in the Gulf of America.  wink777

I'm not so sure that renaming the body of water is going to make any difference.  That's just like committing a crime under Jane Doe and changing your name to Susie Que; you're still the same person who committed a crime, just using a different name. Just like all debt doesn't disappear once you marry and assume a different name.

It's the same body of water folks. It doesn't matter what it's called.
Live in  harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly, do not claim to be wiser than you are.  Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all.  If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.

Actually, I believe that "Gulf of Florida" would be a better name.

Without Florida sticking out in the way, there would be no "gulf" to begin with...

1.8 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day,
1.9 million barrels of oil.

That is 15% of US production.

As wells deplete, new wells will have to be drilled or production will slow and eventually stop.

Stopping new drilling is the equivalent of a track star shooting their feet.
Not to mention the economic impact on the Gulf ports that service and construct offshore drilling rigs.

Seventeen Techniques for Truth Suppression

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
