Los Angeles Fire Chief Kristin Crowley is clinging onto her job by a thread sources say, after she hugged staff goodbye and entered a meeting with the mayor.

Crowley told staff in her office she was getting fired by Mayor Karen Bass at a meeting 4pm on Friday.

But she emerged from the meeting saying she was still in her job - for now.

'Kristin was summoned by Bass this afternoon, about 4pm. She came back from that meeting, hugged her staff goodbye and left. She said she was fired,' the source said.

The alleged booting follows Crowley lashing out against the Mayor's cuts to her department, in an interview with a local Fox TV station around 12pm Friday.

'My message is the fire department needs to be properly funded,' the Chief said. 'It's not.'

'Did they fail you?' Fox LA's Gigi Graciette asked. 'Yes,' Crowley replied.

The Fire Department (LAFD) did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A second source close to Bass' office told DailyMail.com that they were aware Crowley 'was called to the office' this afternoon, but did not know the outcome of the Mayor and Chief's meeting.

A retired senior LAFD official told DailyMail.com that he was shocked by Crowley's comments in her TV interview.

The $750,000-a-year LA water czar is responsible for a raft of failures that contributed to the devastating Palisades Fire, fire department insiders told DailyMail.com.

On Mayor Karen Bass's orders, the city maxed out its budget to 'attract private-sector talent', hiring Department of Water and Power (LADWP) CEO Janisse Quiñones on a $750,000 salary in May – almost double that of her predecessor.

Now, Quiñones is being blamed by LA Fire Department (LAFD) insiders for leaving a nearby reservoir disconnected and fire hydrants broken for months, DailyMail.com can reveal, leading to firefighters running out of water as they battled the devastating Palisades Fire this week.

And, Daily Mail.com has learned, Quiñones past employer is also linked to fire scandals. She was previously a top executive at electricity company PG&E, which went bankrupt over liability for several massive wildfires in California.

She served as senior vice president at Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) from 2021 to 2023.  .  .

Indeed, what’s interesting about the US – and this has been highlighted by the reaction to the wildfires that have ripped through Los Angeles – is the shift in the public debate, particularly as it relates to the failure of government agencies or political leaders.

Nobody is buying the largely Democrat-propagated excuse that the disaster, which has so far killed 10 people and left neighbourhoods including Pacific Palisades in ashes, can be excused as entirely the fault of climate change.

I have to admit, I was expecting the knives to come out, but not like this.

Not fifteen minutes ago - so that would be about 8 Central - I was watching a Jake Tapper interview with Kristen Crowley, the LAFD Fire Chief.

She was being flat-out honest about the shortages they've worked under...

...and I found myself sympathizing with her. I didn't see it as 'eating each other alive' anymore, especially as I'd watched her earlier interview with a local news station. The reporter had pressed the chief right out of the gate, 'Did they fail you?' referring to the massive budget cuts that her department has been laboring under. The water that was supposed to be in the hydrants.

And the chief, to her credit, says 'yes.'

Sounds like the Chief is pretty competent and firing her in the middle of this maelstrom would have reached a level of stupid that just about anyone couldn't deny. On Friday’s broadcast of NewsNation’s “Cuomo,” Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) stated that she doesn’t want to get into politics about the fires in California, but “services cost money and we should be willing to get the richest people in this  in this country, the richest 1% that is protected, make sure they pay their fair taxes so that we can have the money to provide the services. With that money and with those resources, the people who have been selected or elected to do the job should do the job.”

Waters began by saying, “I’m not into the blame game. I’m not into talking about whether or not Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) is trying to protect himself and run for president, none of that.”

Flare-up in Palisades Fire prompts fresh evacuation, road closures in Mandeville Canyon, Brentwood

A flare-up in Southern California has led to more mandatory evacuation orders as the Palisades Fire moved northeast, according to the Los Angeles mayor's office.

The latest order is in effect from Sunset Boulevard north to Encino Reservoir and from the 405 Freeway west to Mandeville Canyon. Brentwood has also been threatened.

The Getty Center Dr. and Skirball Center Dr. off-ramps are now closed on both I-405 northbound and I-405 southbound.

"The Palisades Fire has got a new significant flare-up on the eastern portion and continues to move northeast," Los Angeles Fire Department Capt. Erik Scott told KTLA.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office said a curfew is now in effect from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. in all mandatory evacuation areas impacted by the Palisades and Eaton wildfires. The sheriff's office urged residents to avoid these areas for their own protection and to allow first responders to work effectively.

The curfew will be strictly enforced and violators may face serious consequences, including fines of up to $1,000 or possible imprisonment, the sheriff's office said.

Gov. Newsom cut fire budget by $100M months before lethal California fires

A review of last year's California state budget shows California Gov. Gavin Newsom cut funding for wildfire and forest resilience by more than $100 million.

The budget, signed in June and covering the 2024-25 fiscal year, eliminated $101 million from seven "wildfire and forest resilience" programs, according to a report from Newsweek.

The California fires, responsible for destroying more than 10,000 buildings in the Los Angeles area, are still not contained.

Cal Fire had a $5 million reduction in spending on fuel reduction teams, including funds used to pay for vegetation management work by the California National Guard, the report noted.

Newsom's director of communications, Izzy Gardon, called the budget cuts a "ridiculous lie," in a statement to Fox News Digital Friday night.

"The governor has doubled the size of our firefighting army, built the world’s largest aerial firefighting fleet and the state has increased the forest management ten-fold since he took office," she wrote. "Facts matter."

His office attached statistics that refer to the overall increase in spending and personnel over a number of years since he took office in 2019, as opposed to commenting on the most recent cuts.

Anybody else but me notice there is nothing in her statement about what she does that gives a priority to what she should be doing, ie, managing water resources and power?
What I read is environmental, renewable, clean energy and equity instead.

She needs to be fired immediately and save the city 750,000 $ in salary
