US transfers 11 Guantanamo detainees to Oman, leaving 15 at Cuba facility

The transfer is the largest yet during the Biden administration.

In a major development, the Pentagon on Monday announced the transfer 11 Yemeni detainees at Guantanamo Bay to Oman, a move that now leaves only 15 detainees still at the detention facility.

"The United States appreciates the willingness of the government of Oman and other partners to support ongoing U.S. efforts focused on responsibly reducing the detainee population and ultimately closing the Guantanamo Bay facility," said a DOD statement.

In recent weeks, the Pentagon had transferred out four other detainees from Guantanamo including a detainee who was brought to the detention facility at the base in Cuba the day that it opened, but was never charged.

NBC’s Kube: Biden Delayed Transfer of Gitmo Detainees Over Fears of ‘Optics’ of Them Possibly Going Free

On Monday’s edition of NBC’s “Hallie Jackson Now,” NBC News Correspondent Courtney Kube reported that the Biden administration planned to transfer the eleven Guantanamo Bay detainees that were transferred to Oman on Monday back in 2023, but officials were worried about  “the political optics” of “sending them to Oman where they could be released, free.”

Kube said, “[W]hy this case is particularly important is not just the number…but the fact that they have been approved for transfer for years.”
