New congestion pricing toll begins in New York City

MANHATTAN, New York City (WABC) -- New York City's new congestion pricing toll for drivers entering the center of Manhattan began on Sunday, meaning many people will pay $9 to access the busiest part of the Big Apple during peak hours.

The toll is meant to reduce traffic gridlock in the densely packed city while also raising money to help fix its ailing public transit infrastructure.

"We've been studying this issue for five years. And it only takes about five minutes if you're in midtown Manhattan to see that New York has a real traffic problem," Metropolitan Transportation Authority Chair and CEO Janno Lieber told reporters late Friday after a court hearing that cleared the way for the tolls.

"We need to make it easier for people who choose to drive, or who have to drive, to get around the city."

Judge denies New Jersey request; congestion pricing will begin on Sunday

FORT LEE, New Jersey (WABC) -- Congestion pricing is starting early Sunday morning after New Jersey's request for a temporary restraining order was denied by a federal judge.

The MTA will start the program as planned Sunday morning even as New Jersey prepares to keep fighting in court, with the governor's office announcing it will seek emergency relief from the Third Circuit Court of Appeals.

Judge Leo Gordon heard arguments from lawyers representing New Jersey, the MTA and the Federal Highway Administration in court.

Nearly 200 people were slapped with tickets, three were arrested and more than two dozen vehicles were seized as NYPD officers went out to enforce the contentious congestion pricing plan in Manhattan this week, authorities said.

The department said 81 of the summonses were for improper or covered plates, which could mean plates that have a number or letter scratched off or painted over, as The Post observed on several vehicles Sunday — when the $9 toll kicked in.

Officers launched the enforcement effort on Tuesday within the congestion tolling zone below 60th Street, which effectively encompasses all of Manhattan south of Central Park.

Trump can’t undo congestion pricing , not that easily. At least let it stay and see if it keeps doing well , even drivers are starting to like the trade off of paying a little more while getting by much quicker without all the traffic .

Congestion pricing is least likely to affect tourism.  It's a regressive tax on low and middle income workers who have to drive into lower Manhattan for work in order to fund the virtue-signalling of wealthy liberal elites.

You do understand the word 'logic' don't you?

Yes, I do.  Most tourists travel via taxi or car service, and expect to pay a lot to visit NYC, so the congestion charge will be both opaque to them and mostly expected as just another cost of visiting the “Big City”, so it won’t substantially affect tourism; it’ll nibble around the edges, but mostly it will affect people who live in the five Boros and surrounding counties.

Maybe you should be reading up on Econ 101 as well as Law 101.
