A push to cut veterans’ disability benefits is gaining traction, experts warn

A growing chorus is calling for cuts to Veteran Affairs disability benefits as a way to save federal dollars — a move that ignores the very real costs of two decades of war, and could cause irreparable harm to generations of veterans, experts warn.

The most recent call for cuts is a widely-criticized opinion article in The Economist on Nov. 28 that described veterans’ disability benefits as “absurdly generous.” Experts told Task & Purpose that the essay is representative of  widespread public misperceptions that threaten to reduce veterans’ compensation for service-connected health conditions.
 
The Economist piece echoes an argument made by the Washington Post’s editorial board last year that limiting disability payments to veterans would help get America’s financial house in order.

These arguments may now have a real chance of becoming law.

I agree with your sarcasm, and your suggestion, too.

Just think of the billions of dollars that would have been saved by just finishing the wall.

The last thing we should consider is cutting the disability pay and medical benefits of those who got injured in service to this country.

Illegals over veterans, that'll go over real well.

VA benefits are like Social Security in politics, is a 3rd rail that most politicos aren't willing to even wave a finger at for fear of getting zapped.

Veterans chose to give up years of their lives at the risk of being injured, maimed or killed. The very least the US can do is honor their agreement.

But then, the question must be asked; Does the US have any honor remaining?
Throwing our allegiances to political parties in the long run gave away our liberty.

This reminds me of Putin. Russia is also cutting any kind of veteran care to service members and their families.
Like the U.S., Putin promises one thing before the person signs up or is drafted, and then cuts it all out afterwards.

The Establishment treats US veterans as disposable heroes.

Maybe the Washington Post and The Economist can move their headquarters and executives to Pyongyang, North Korea.  I'm sure Rocket Man is very frugal with veterans' benefits.

Do you really want to lower the cost of caring for disabled veterans?  Stop sending them overseas to fight discretionary forever wars of foreign misadventure - Beirut, Mogadishu, Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq, Iraq again, Irag yet again, Afghanistan, etc.

The WaPo and Economist types prefer illegal immigrants because they depress wages and provide a low cost shadow labor force to exploit.
