The all weather flying is contingent on electronics. If those fail, the pilot, unable to maintain the orientation of the craft by instruments, is subject to vertigo, a well documented disorientation that any pilot can be the subject of. Without the basics such as artificial horizon and altimiter and airspeed, it would be difficult to stay airborne. That the plane continued on for 65 miles without stalling or flying into terrain is likely a function of how well trimmed the aircraft was and altitude, not that the pilot abandoned the aircraft prematurely. Had it crashed in one mile, would he have faced the same discipline?
