Plans to cool the Earth by blocking sunlight are gaining momentum, but critical voices risk being excluded
Story by Albert Van Wijngaarden, Adrian Hindes, Chloe Colomer • 21h

Solar geoengineering research is advancing fast, after a recent flurry of funding announcements. Yet these technologies are still speculative and have many critics, and we worry their concerns won't be heard. If geoengineering is essentially allowed to self-regulate, with no effective global governance, future research could easily take us down a dangerous path.

Solar geoengineering refers to proposals to reduce global warming by reflecting a portion of sunlight back into space before it reaches the Earth's surface. In its best-known form, this means using high-flying aircraft to inject tiny reflective particles into the upper atmosphere.

This so-called "stratospheric aerosol injection" hasn't actually happened yet, beyond a few very small experiments with balloons. Yet for a long time, such ideas remained fringe and too controversial to even consider—and for some academics they still are.

The academic discussion was highly polarized from the start. Opponents, mainly governance scholars and social scientists, stood firmly entrenched against assumed proponents, mainly natural scientists and engineers. Both sides had their champions, arguments, assumptions, key publications and meetings, generally working on the topic without proper engagement with the other side.

The thing it we cleaned up our fossil fuel burning so the naturally occuring cloud seeding from sulphur dioxide emissions was removed.  There is a recently published climate model that does not assume greenhouse gasses are to blame, and instead finds that all of the warming for the past 40 years and 80% of the variance in temperatures over the same period can be explained by changed in albedo, mostly due to changes in cloud formation but to a lesser extent to changes in ice pack extent and land use. Some of this is caused by "clean air" initiatives by human beings, some by changes in cosmic ray flux, some by the Arctic (but not Antarctic) ice pack melting (which might be a feed back from atmospheric warming, or might be due to undersea vulcanism, something else the alarmists ignore).

One doesn't need dangerous geoengineering to undo the human-caused part, just allowing 1970's levels of sulphur content in jet fuels.

And when they behead your own people in the wars which are to come, then you will know what this was all about.

The real problem is that this has morphed over the years from grant-gathering junk science to an assumption, fostered by media and special interests, to idiots actually thinking they can control the climate, except for their ability to screw with a natural system in attempts to somehow 'set' the temperature of the planet.

This hubris will not end well, because humans have thrived in warm climates, and died like flies in cold ones.

Add in the modern propensity for instantaneous gratification, and there is no way the proponents of this scheme will cut off a degree of anticipated warming, they WILL overshoot, and because their data is corrupted and the models flawed, could well start the next ice age trying to reduce temperatures by an inflated number derived from flawed models that was once used to panic the grant machine out of more money and suckers out of donations, a number that they have begun to believe because they have managed to suppress any information or thought to the contrary, even going so far as to use truant teenagers to do so.

Such is the danger of censorship, it cranks up the volume and reverb in the echo chamber.

Every single action taken, predicated on improving the environment, has had "unintended consequences", and this will be no exception.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Blocking the sunlight??   How absurd.
Live in  harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly, do not claim to be wiser than you are.  Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all.  If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.

Makes you wonder how well their solar arrays will work with that.

Back around the 1980's, the "nuclear freeze" people were shouting about the dangers of a "nuclear winter".

Now, they're trying to CREATE one.

Also see the movie, "Snowpiercer"...

If I look at the planets in our solar system with low sunshine, I don't see a lot of life??

We seem to be in the catbird seat. Not too hot, not too cold. Maybe these educated idgets need to leave well enough alone.

Don't mess with God and Mother Nature!
