US Military now fully on board with using videogame controllers to control its weapons – hopefully, stick drift doesn't cause a problem

The ubiquitous nature of the modern-day video game controller cannot be denied. Virtually every young person growing up is at least aware of an Xbox or PlayStation controller, even if they are not a gamer.

The two-handed contraption adorned with mini-joysticks and buttons is as familiar these days as the keyboard and mouse, both of which are used in countless settings, so we should not be surprised when game controllers pop up in a different lane from gaming.
 
Earlier this week we looked at how surgeons were using PlayStation controllers to carry out operations thousands of miles away (granted on a pig) and we may also be aware that the US military has used controllers to fly its drones and control other weaponry and countermeasures for a good while at least.

Is this an admission the recruits of today are too stupid to be taught traditional military techniques? :yowsa:

No.  It's adopting an adequate existing standard (the PlayStation controller) as a control mechanism for new weapons systems (drones), which moreover has the virtue of being familiar to many new recruits, to the point that they are already skilled in its use.

That's the way I see it, too, adapting the weapon to the user, instead of the other way around should fast track the training. What it does not mean is that the military can't get someone to manufacture a higher quality control module in that format.

I'd have them made here, same general format, but better quality and more durable.
That way, the Chinese couldn't stick in a 'cheat code' or two.
