Might want to cross thread/connect those ropes together, looks like last one will slip off the side, but all in all, a good idea. I have seen it done on trailers before as a safety measure.

Have you evacuated? @cato potatoe

No I stuck around, as my condo is not in a flood zone, and it isn't supposed to be hot this weekend.  From observing the traffic over the past few days, I would venture to guess half of people in Pinellas County moved inland.  Nothing except a few bars were open this afternoon --- many businesses having boarded up.

That band stretching 150 miles to the west of the Everglades contains a bunch of rotating storms.  When those move over the peninsula, it will get tricky.

Milton seems to be nudging to the NE and pointed roughly at Sarasota for the past hour.

I hate to recommend this, because these are the types of vehicles I drive, and it will only drive demand up. If you are in a flood/hurricane area, have one vehicle that is a 4WD, sits higher than many (F-250,K-2500 Suburban/Silverado, or similar with a large capacity fuel tank and aggressive tread tires. I drive a K-1500 Suburban with a 32 gallon tank, and even in foul weather (usually a blizzard in these parts) can go at least 300 miles without a fill-up in 4WD, although generally I'd say it is good for 400 or more. It may take a chunk of change to fill up, but drive it down to 1/4 tank at least twice a year, and take it out every week or so to keep the battery charged up and the juices flowing. Drive something more economical for your short hops and daily runs as a rule; lower mileage on your survival vehicle means less overall wear, and usually lower insurance.
These used to be cheap, maybe not so much now--"cash for clunkers" destroyed a bunch of them. The older, the simpler, the cheaper the parts, and you can do most of the repairs yourself if you have a modest mechanical ability, a few tools, and YouTube videos to guide you (less frustrating than Chilton's or Haynes for specific tasks). Here, where no road salt is used, and there is no salt water in the air, the bodies tend to be rust free, or very nearly so. There, I know, that may well not be the case, but its the running gear that will get you out, not the paint job. While functionality is the key, looks are not essential. Make sure the wipers/washer work and the blades are of high quality. (Cover it if the HOA gripes). Sanding and priming from a spray can will generally stabilize the sheet metal decay, and wax (even the kind at the car wash) will help preserve what paint remains.

One of these could well get you from Tampa, say, to Atlanta or Columbia SC on a single tank of fuel (less if you are idling in traffic a lot), although I recommend running on the top 1/2 of the tank (use 1/2 and look for some place to top it off), which is standard winter fare in these parts.

Milton continues to still works south of guidance path.  Don't be surprised to see cone shifted southward at next advisory a few more miles.

Another anomoly I am noticing  is that most of these C-5 monsters have a lot more symmetry than Milton.  He's had a persisitent SW->NE elongation.  Not as much as shear, but strong upper steering currents.

I am guessing all Briefers (hoping) are out of harms way.  Eyewall landfall is now just a tad over 24 hours away.  Whcih means extreme conditons preventing escape in maybe 12-18.

My same wishes....

Like I like to say, it's down to counting lat/long tics.  I have to admit i was surprised that the path was readjusted nortward in the last advisory, even though Milton is remaining south and east of track guidance.  The large strong mass of convection that decoupled from the main storm to the NE, is kind of puzzling, in that there doesn't seem to be that much sheer to create that "clump"

I know it is kind of hard to extract a positive, but at least the windfield is still relatively small.  the diameter of hurricane winds is only about 50 miles.  So, the widespread devestation at the coast should be localized.  But as the storm hits, the wind field disperses, and there may be towns with more damage than at the coast.

And my last thoughts.  Please, I hope there aren't any people within storm surge elevation, trying to ride this thing out.   Not worth it.

Just a brief note to those who say not to pay any attention to Milton's track. If Milton goes inland somewhere South of Tampa bay, even just a few miles, Tampa will be spared the worst of it. If it goes inland at or North of the bay batten down the hatches.

Prayers.

Prayers for our friends and families who may be in the path of this monster. Prayers for countless people whose lives will be altered or lost. I pray for the responders and emergency people. Many people will test their limits. I hope Milton becomes a dud but it sure doesn’t look that way.

My situation from last winter is but a tiny fraction of what these linemen will be going through but I watched some crews working on downed lines here.  We had nasty, nasty conditions with snow, cold, high winds, downed trees, etc. “Badasses” is totally apt.

And kudos to DJT.

That is incredible.  Tropical storm tornado spinoffs are typical F0-and at most F1 on the Fuji Scale.  Hard to tell from camera angle, but that one has an EF3-ish look to it. Are we sure its real?  Because I have never seen a tornado that large off a landfalling hurricane.

And secondly, the storm still is far enough offshore, that we shouldn't be seeing these frictional spinoffs quite yet....

10 am update.....  Observations....

1. Storm still tic-ing south of guidance track, so I am really puzzled why the NHC still has the bulls eye on Tampa
2. Also puzzled on what the NHC is seeing that would turn in NNE (again toward Tampa).  Upper air currents from my POV don't see anything north of the storm that would draw it in that direction, outside normal Corralis Effect.
3. As we speak, tropical force winds have reached the west coast of Florida/
4. We are in the midst of a mature powerful hurricane, and right now, the biggest factor is where the storm in normal cyclogenesis resides as it landfalls.  The best scenario, is that it happens during an eyewall replacement.  That might make the difference between a 130 mph storm and one at 160 mph.
5. I am really impressed with this huge clump of convection located to the NE of Milton, that is almost as big as the storm itself.  AND...  This isn't normal convection from this clump.  We are seeing cloud top elevations, almost as high as what is at the storm itself.  One thing that might be adding to the NHC's thinking Milton weakens, is that the "clump" might being drawing warm water vapor from Milton's NE quadrant.
6. West GOM dry air infusion didn't deliver to weakening like I hoped.   Milton was too strong.
