In Chaotic Kursk, Russian Vehicles Piled With Troops Are Rolling Right Up To Ukrainian Tanks—And Getting Blasted At Point-Blank Range

‘We are very lucky that they do a lot of banzai attacks,’ a Ukrainian drone operator noted.

David Axe  |  Nov 11, 2024  |  02:10pm EST

Russian marines and paratroopers supported by North Korean reinforcements are hurling themselves at Ukrainian positions in western Russia’s Kursk Oblast—determined, it seems, to force the Ukrainians out of Kursk before U.S. President-elect Donald Trump is inaugurated in January.

Elements of three powerful Ukrainian brigades are holding the line along the left flank of the 250-square-mile Ukrainian salient in Kursk, but they’re outnumbered and outgunned by the Russians and their foreign allies. The Kremlin is apparently willing to accept enormous casualties recapturing Kursk from the Ukrainian troops that invaded the oblast in August.

“Very cruel fights are taking part in [the] Kursk area,” Ukrainian drone operator Kriegsforscher reported.

Popping smoke to obscure their movements, Russian paratroopers from the 51st Airborne Regiment and marines from the 155th Naval Infantry Brigade attacked Ukrainian lines head-on on Monday. Kriegsforscher counted 18 Russian BMP, BMD and MT-LB infantry fighting vehicles and armored personnel carriers laden with infantry as well as five T-72, T-80 and T-90 tanks, all organized into three groups.

Ukrainian drones and tanks met the assault. The fighting was chaotic and bloody and, in the end, the Russians left behind 15 IFVs and APCs and three tanks—the terrible price of their frontal assault. “We are very lucky that they do a lot of banzai attacks,” Kriegsforscher noted.

The fighting is close and confusing. According to Kriegsforscher, two Ukrainian tank crews—possibly from the newly reorganized 17th Heavy Mechanized Brigade—rolled out to meet the Russians and crossed paths with, but failed to notice, four Russian BMDs or BMPs full of infantry.

The Ukrainian tankers didn’t spot the Russian vehicles until the vehicles disgorged 15 paratroopers. That’s when the tanks opened fire, destroying one BMD.

It’s not unusual for entire Russian squads to get wiped out in a single blast. During an assault on Saturday, 15 Russians dismounted from one or more 51st Airborne Regiment vehicles. Kriegsforscher claimed their drone unit killed or wounded every single Russian, contributing to what may have been record Russian losses in recent days.

Ukrainians are dying, too. The Russians reportedly captured and executed six Ukrainian troops along the front line in Kursk recently, extending a series of brutal killings of prisoners largely perpetrated by the 155th Naval Infantry Brigade.  .  .

Macron and Starmer vow 'unwavering' Ukraine support

Sam Francis  |  15 hours ago

France and the UK will support Ukraine for as long as necessary "to thwart Russia's war of aggression", French President Emmanuel Macron and Sir Keir Starmer have said.

The prime minister marked Armistice Day at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Paris as a guest of Macron on Monday, and held a meeting with his French counterpart to talk about Russia’s invasion and stopping illegal migration in the Channel.

A statement from the Elysee Palace said the two leaders had reaffirmed their commitment to "support Ukraine unwaveringly".

Their meeting comes as questions are being asked about US President-elect Donald Trump's support for Ukraine after he said he could end the war "in one day".  .  .  .

This is exactly what Trump wanted when he was in office before - that Europe step up and pay a bigger share of their defense.  This is exactly what is happening.  The only current obstacle is Joe Biden threatening them against expansion.

So they are committed to supporting Ukraine unwaveringly, that’s putting kind of weasely, does that mean financially or like cheerleaders? I take anything from socialists with a very large grain of salt.

Maybe they'll just be like Andy Sipowicz on NYPD Blue - and tell Zelenskyy they'll "have a good thought for" Ukraine.
The abnormal is not the normal just because it is prevalent.

Russia ‘suffering 2,000 casualties a day’ as Kursk counter-offensive falters

12 November 2024  •  12:39pm

Russia is suffering nearly 2,000 casualties a day trying to recapture the Kursk region and seize ground along the main front line in eastern Ukraine, according to Kyiv’s military.

The figure is almost double Russia’s casualty rate over the summer, highlighting a push by the Kremlin to secure as much territory as possible before Donald Trump, the US president-elect, potentially tries to impose a peace deal when he takes office in January.

In Kursk, Ukrainian soldiers insisted they were repelling the 50,000 Russian troops that the Kremlin has tasked with retaking the partially occupied region.

Anastasiia Blyshchyk, a spokesman for Ukraine’s 47th separate mechanised brigade, said the situation was difficult but “under control” and that Russian forces were suffering “dark days”.

A video, purportedly filmed in the region on Monday, showed a column of Russian armoured vehicles, each carrying around 30 soldiers, driving one after another into a minefield and then blowing up.  .  .  .

Russia Preparing Mass Government Layoff

Nov. 11, 2024

Russia’s government is planning to resume major layoffs of public sector employees next year after they were put on hold due to the Covid-19 pandemic and full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Kommersant business newspaper reported Monday.

Authorities began state service optimization reforms in 2019, which at the time saw around 10% of federal government employees lose their jobs amid a digitization rollout in the public sector.

President Vladimir Putin signed a decree last month ordering the territorial branches of federal government agencies to cut staff by 10% no later than July 1, 2025. This latest round of layoffs is expected to free up funding to provide remaining employees with higher salaries.

Around 400,000 people currently work in the territorial divisions of Russia’s federal agencies, which Kommersant said amounts to around 0.5% of the country’s overall workforce. Some agencies may be able to reach the layoff target by cutting unfilled positions, the newspaper wrote.

Those employees earn on average 60,300 rubles ($614) per month, or 45% less than their colleagues in federal agencies  .  .  .

Ukraine seeks to win over Trump with natural resources and troop proposals

Two ideas included in Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s ‘victory plan’ were crafted with the Republican’s presidency in mind

Christopher Miller in Kyiv, Max Seddon in Riga and Henry Foy in Brussels  |  a day ago

Ukraine has been building on its “victory plan” for the incoming Donald Trump administration, highlighting potential business deals, access to raw materials and troop deployments in an effort to sway the famously transactional US president-elect.

Ukraine’s allies in Europe and the US, including senior Republicans, have offered advice on how to best frame proposals that incentivise close co-operation with Kyiv rather than cutting off critical aid to the country, said Ukrainian and European officials.

The proposals stem from concerns among Ukrainian and European officials that Trump could move quickly to seal a peace deal with Russia, in effect torpedoing western support to Ukraine.

Two of the ideas were laid out in Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s “victory plan” with Trump specifically in mind, said people involved in drawing it up. The proposals were later presented to Trump when Ukraine’s president met him in New York in September.

One idea would replace some US troops stationed in Europe with Ukrainian forces after the war.

The other — first devised by Republican senator Lindsey Graham, a Trump ally, according to people involved in designing Zelenskyy’s “victory plan” — suggests sharing Ukraine’s critical natural resources with western partners.

Graham’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Trump was “interested” in the two points, said a person briefed on the meeting.  .  .  .

Russian State TV Mocks Melania Trump Over "Sexy Photos"

Maryna Kulakova  |  Nov 12, 2024  |  16:14

Russia's state-controlled channel Russia 1 aired explicit photos of Melania Trump in a segment following her husband’s Donald Trump US election victory.

The segment, showcasing photos from her modeling career, aired on the prime-time show 60 Minutes, hosted by pro-Kremlin figures Olga Skabeeva and Yevgeny Popov.

"Now that Melania Trump's husband has finally won, she is getting ready to come back to the White House for a second time. Here is how Melania looked in the year 2000. This is the cover of the magazine GQ,” Popov said, presenting images of Melania.  .  .

Taiwan May Have Rearmed Ukraine’s Air Defense Force

There are more indications Taipei sent Kyiv a huge consignment of HAWK systems.

David Axe  |  Nov 12, 2024  |  12:37am EST

Without much fanfare, Taiwan may have become one of the Ukraine air force’s biggest boosters. According to former Pentagon official Tony Hu, Taiwan has donated its surplus HAWK surface-to-air missile batteries to the Ukrainian air force.

Hu’s comments to YouTube channel RJ War Room seem to confirm reporting from 2023 hinting at a U.S.-brokered air-defense deal between Taiwan and Ukraine. The Taiwanese MIM-23 Homing All-the-Way Killer missiles, plus their launchers and radars, would complement additional HAWKs donated to Ukraine by the United States and Spain.

In all, Ukraine could deploy as many as 15 of the Raytheon-made HAWK batteries, each with at least six three-missile launchers and associated radars. The Ukrainian air force went to war in February 2022 with around 50 SAM batteries—S-300s and other ex-Soviet models, mostly—and has since swapped out many of the surviving Soviet batteries for more modern Western systems, including American-made Patriots.

Assuming the overall Ukrainian air-defense force structure has remained roughly the same size after subtracting combat losses and adding donated equipment, the HAWKs could comprise nearly a third of the force. Taiwan isn’t a vocal supporter of Ukraine’s war effort, but it is a significant one.

The HAWK is more than 60 years old. But it’s simple, reliable, highly-mobile on its towed launchers, easy to upgrade and works just fine against slower drones, cruise missiles and manned aircraft. As a bonus, the 17-foot HAWK missile is compatible with another, more modern air-defense system that Ukraine uses: the U.S.-Norwegian National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System, or NASAMS.  .  .  .

FWIW, the blowhard BOR believes that Trump has already worked out a Ukraine cease fire agreement.  :pondering:
