Longshore workers at ports from Maine to Texas are set to walk off the job early Tuesday, staging what could become the most disruptive strike to the US economy in decades.

The strike could stop the flow of a wide variety of goods over the docks of almost all the cargo ports on the East Coast and Gulf Coast - everything from bananas to European wine and liquor, along with clothing, toys, household goods and European autos. Also affected could be parts needed to keep US factories operating and American workers in those plants on the job.

On one side of negotiations is the US Maritime Association, which uses the acronym USMX. It represents the major shipping lines, all of which are foreign-owned, as well as terminal operators and port authorities. It is facing a strike threat by the International Longshoremen’s Association, which represents 85,000 members overall.

While the union says there about 50,000 members covered by the contract, the USMX puts the number of jobs at the ports closer to 25,000, with not enough jobs for all the workers in the union to work every day.

But if those union members walk out, as is widely expected, the strike will shut down three dozen locations at 14 port authorities along the East Coast and Gulf Coast.

Depending on duration, a strike could mean shortages of consumer and industrial goods, possibly driving up prices again. And that could hit an economy that is finally recovering from a pandemic-induced inflation spike.

In addition, the halt of supplies of parts needed by US factories could disrupt those plants’ operations and even lead to temporary layoffs.

Imports and exports affected

The ports involved include the Port of New York and New Jersey, the nation’s third-largest port by volume of cargo handled. But it also includes ports with other specialities.

I guess stock up now while you can.  This is reminiscent of what happened during the pandemic; ports were closed and shelves were bare.  I just tried stocking up our pantry (sigh). (I didn't even buy cleaning products yet.)  Something has to give here sooner or later. I'd like to think people's voices will be heard at the ballot box, but I'm not holding my breath.

Attention shoppers: Brace for empty shelves, rising prices if port workers strike, expert says

Dockworkers along the East and Gulf coasts have pledged to strike unless a new contract is reached by October, prompting experts to warn higher prices and empty shelves could await consumers.

In fact, some experts say prices could rise before year's end, impacting goods during the critical holiday season. The dire situation arose just as consumers were beginning to experience some relief from inflation.

The International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) is negotiating on behalf of 45,000 dockworkers at three dozen U.S. ports from Maine to Texas that collectively handle about half of the country's seaborne imports. It warned its members are prepared to stop work if they don't have a new contract by the Oct. 1 deadline.

The Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) said in a statement that "retailers view this strike and its imminent disruption as a self-inflicted wound to the U.S. economy."

JPMorgan estimated that for each day the ports are shut down, it will take roughly six days to clear the backlog. Analysts pegged the economic impact of a strike to about $5 billion per day, according to a research note published earlier this month.

Even though retailers have made contingency plans to minimize its effects,"the longer a work stoppage goes on, the harder it will be to do so," the RILA said.

Several experts have told FOX Business that this type of disruption in shipping and supply chains often leads to product shortages, which drives up prices. ..................

Where is this 'relief from inflation' that these 'experts' [sic] mentioned?  Onions are $1.59/lb.  Onions!

Just remember who's responsible for those empty shelves, and which political party enables them.

As I mentioned, I hope people remember this at the ballot box, but with the DEMS so adept at stealing elections, I'm not holding my breath.

Longshoremen’s union says port strike on East Coast to start Tuesday

.

The largest union representing port workers in the United States said an anticipated port strike will begin on Tuesday, as negotiations have reportedly stalled.

The port strike will be on the East Coast and the Gulf of Mexico in the United States, and includes ports from Maine to Texas.

According to Reuters, there were no negotiations planned for either Sunday or before the midnight deadline on Tuesday between the International Longshoremen’s Association and the United States Maritime Alliance, which represents employers of the East Coast and Gulf Coast longshore industry.

“United States Maritime Alliance … refuses to address a half-century of wage subjugation,” the union said in a statement.

President Joe Biden said on Sunday he would not intervene to prevent the strike, adding that he doesn’t believe in the Taft-Hartley Act, which allows presidents to intervene in a labor dispute if it threatens national security.

“It’s collective bargaining. I don’t believe in Taft-Hartley,” he said.

Dock workers have long aided and abetted the democrats, when the democrats have a crisis to plunder at the nations expense.  In over 70 years, i've seen this crap before!  One party democrat rule, hell reigns, and mercilessly so.  Some times you get what you fought for, and richly earned!

  • Dems-greatest existential threat to USA republic!
Already noticeable.  Went to the store today, and Ingles, and was shocked how empty the shelves were.

We may be approaching that moment in time of food shortages resulting in starvation.  I just see bad days ahead.

If Harris is elected, and I believe she will be, even if they have to FIX IT, dark days are ahead.  If Trump is elected, I can see the House and Senate both attempting to prevent him from taking office.  And don't kid yourself, the POSs like Mitt Romney will be standing there to block his taking the oath.

Dark days I tell you.

Stock up on what you can now.

US shoppers start to 'stock up' on essentials as port strikes pressure prices to go 'higher than ever'
Americans at the grocery store are stocking up as port strikes could begin at midnight on Tuesday
By Kristen Altus FOXBusiness

As American shipping ports from Texas to Maine prepare for a potential strike, consumers are beginning to stock up on essential supplies as experts warn the industry conflict could cause shortages and price hikes on everyday items.

"If there's a strike, prices in the supermarkets will go up higher than ever," Gristedes and D'Agostino Supermarkets Chairman and CEO John Catsimatidis said on "Varney & Co." Monday.

"I wasn't prepared because I didn't know [about the strike], but now that I do, I'll investigate. I'll look into it," one woman told FOX Business’ Madison Alworth on Friday at a Gristedes store in New York City. "I would stock up as much, not ridiculously, but at least try to get a few more items to have just in case."

"Yes, I am [worried]," another shopper told Alworth. "It's hard to be able to make ends meet as it is. It's going to be even worse."

Unionized dockworkers in the International Longshoremen's Association, which represents 45,000 members at East Coast and Gulf Coast ports, may go on strike beginning Oct. 1 if an agreement isn't reached by the end of Monday.

Port workers strike turns violent in Baltimore
By Melanie Alnwick
 October 1, 2024 7:37am EDT
FOX 5 DC

The port workers strike turned violent in Baltimore Tuesday just hours after the contract between the ports and about 45,000 members of the International Longshoremen’s Association expired at midnight.

FOX 5’s Melanie Alnwick was at the Broening Highway Dundalk Marine Terminal and says initially there was confusion and anger as picketers allegedly tried to stop trucks from entering the complex.  ...

The strike is expected to quickly impact perishable imports, such as bananas. Ports affected by the strike handle 3.8 million metric tons of bananas annually, accounting for 75% of the U.S. supply, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation.

The strike could also disrupt exports from East Coast ports and cause congestion at West Coast ports, where workers belong to a different union. While railroads claim they can increase freight capacity from the West Coast, analysts believe it won’t be enough to compensate for the closure of Eastern ports.
The abnormal is not the normal just because it is prevalent.
