Both parties have had a wing that tries to be the party of the common man and an elitist wing for as long as I've been alive. When the GOP appeal to the common man (Eisenhower, Nixon (second time out), Reagan, Bush the Younger -- yes, he was an elitist, but he had a common-man schtick) they tend to win. When they appeal to the (business) elite (Dole, Romney) they tend to lose. The main change that has happened lately has been that the Democrats' elitist wing has been ascendant since the beginning of the century.
