Imagine taking a 30 year old car and bringing its systems up to date--only on a much larger scale.
It's pretty extensive. Just pray the new gear is of the same or better quality and durability as the old gear.
The six years may have been excessive, though it may also be net of disruption by Covid shutdowns and restrictions.
That said, in computers and other electronics, 32 years is huge. Just in terms of microprocessors, in 1982 the mainstream microprocessors were the Z80A, 68000, 8088, and 8086, which now are like Triassic-era dinosaurs or Permian-era amphibians. The power requirements will have grown greatly, and mechanical engineering will have advanced as well, and the computer network cabling will have had to be replaced and extended considerably.
