We have become so dumb as a nation.
We continue to have mass shootings, and we do nothing to try to curtail future shootings. Unfortunately, our use of the death penalty is rendered useless because we take over 20 years to ultimately bring a person to justice. What impact can that have? None!!!
Back in 1971, I read everything in print on capital punishment in the law library. All the data indicated there was zero deterrence with capital punishment. Back then, the average person sat on death row for 14.5 years. Now it is 21+ years. How do either of these durations waiting for capital punishment result in deterrence? They don't.
With a burgeoning population pushing its way to 400 million, I say we up the ante. Time has come to increase the number of offenses that bring a capital punishment judgment. Starting with those stealing people's homes. Nothing irritates me more than that thief that stole $67 million in people's homes on commercials for Title Lock. I say anyone stealing over $100,000 in anything face a capital sentence, and that it be conducted immediately following sentencing.
For mass shootings, where there are multiple witnesses, upon being determined or sentenced as guilty, the guilty individual should be executed at sunrise the next morning. That execution should be made PUBLIC, at worst case pay per view, and the money used as a source of revenue to fund the criminology realm.
Every step involved in the process should be to end mass shootings. Placing someone in prison does not deter mass shootings from happening, but public execution the day after conviction may just have some impact.
Georgia has the death penalty. They executed their first person after a four year hiatus tied to COVID. Why would COVID halt the execution of a felon found guilty and sentenced to death? They use any old excuse to halt the carrying out of justice. The fellow they executed earlier in the year committed his crime in 1974, participating in a brutal gang rape and then the shooting of his ex girlfriend. And the naysayers wanted to use the fact his IQ was 68 as reason not to execute him. He managed to have a life, commit crime, etc.
This 14 year old may well get sentenced with the death penalty, but everyone here knows it will be commuted to life, or 25 years because he is a minor. Just no justice in the USA. And why are we as a society so concerned the person being executed NOT suffer any pain? Makes no sense. Capital punishment should not be concerned with a humane, painless end for these animals.
I am tired of innocent people being slaughtered, and government does nothing. The answer is NOT eliminating gun ownership. The answer is harsh and timely punishment.
And the time has come to have a minimum of two armed guards at every school in the USA.
I served on a school board at a higher end suburban school. Fact is, every high school in the USA has a gun incident every year. But the truth of the matter is that it does not make the news. Students bringing guns to school is a very common event. Fortunately, school officials or the police seize the gun before an ugly event takes place.
