White House says Biden and Harris weren’t invited to Arlington Cemetery by families of service members killed during Afghanistan withdrawal

Biden and Harris' teams pushed back on claims from GOP Sen. Tom Cotton and former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard that the president and vice president had been invited alongside Trump.

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were not invited to Arlington National Cemetery by Gold Star families last week to commemorate the third anniversary of the attack at Abbey Gate, a White House official and a Harris aide told NBC News, refuting separate claims made Sunday by GOP Sen. Tom Cotton and former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard.

The two were speaking about former President Donald Trump's visit to Arlington National Cemetery last week, where he has drawn criticism for posing for photos with Gold Star families in a section of the cemetery where photos are traditionally prohibited.

Last week, White House National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby said Trump’s visit was a “personal invitation by families.”

“There are many ways that we as a nation and our leaders can observe the third anniversary of Abbey Gate,” Kirby said. “Another way is to continue to work, maybe not with a lot of fanfare, maybe not with a lot of public attention, maybe not with TV cameras, but to work every single day to make sure that the families of the fallen and of those who were injured and wounded — not just at Abbey Gate but over the course of the 20-some-odd years that we were in Afghanistan — have the support that they need.”

The U.S. Army also accused a member of Trump's campaign staff of "abruptly push[ing] aside" a cemetery staff member who sought to enforce restrictions on taking photos and video footage at the location.

NBC News’ Kristen Welker falsely claimed that Vice President Kamala Harris met with Gold Star families who lost their servicemen and women during the Abbey Gate suicide bombing when the bodies of those US Armed Forces members returned home for the dignified transfer of their remains. There's only one problem: Harris was not in fact at the dignified transfer.

Welker made the claim in defense of the Democrat presidential candidate during a Meet the Press interview with Senator Tom Cotton on Sunday as Cotton blasted Harris for not meeting with them and not attending a memorial on the 3rd anniversary of their deaths last Monday. GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump was at the memorial and was criticized for that by the Harris campaign.

"All right, let me ask you about another one of the big headlines this week," Welker said. "Donald Trump's visit to Arlington National Cemetery. You've been talking about this. He attended a wreath laying ceremony, obviously, for the 13 service members who were killed during the US withdraw from Afghanistan. He was invited by those family members. Important to say that he also had campaign staffers with him. Photos, videos were posted on a campaign site. Taking campaign photos and videos at grave sites is forbidden under federal law. You, of course, served at Arlington Cemetery in the Old Guard, so I know that this is a sacred place for you. Bottom line, though, I guess, Senator, is it ever appropriate to make campaign content at military gravesites?" Biden used photos from the cemetery in his campaign advertising in 2020.

Your boy just proposed government paying for and mandating insurance companies to pay for IVF treatments, an elective procedure. Do you know what that will do to not only our debt but insurance premiums? This is one of the big criticisms many of us made over Obamacare. I remember having this debate with somebody who supported Obamacare at the time that there’s no way healthcare cost, and premiums,  will go down because you can’t mandate Insurance companies to pay more and have it bring premiums down. Another example were conservatives were right. 



So he not only further threw overboard people like me who favor a more limited federal government, he also did the same with his evangelical base in a futile attempt to get voters he will not get. So while Trump is throwing the Republican party base over the side of the boat, the Harris campaign is registering massive numbers of new voters in demographic groups that she will need to win. Similar to what Barack Obama did in 2008. And the enthusiasm gap has widened to 2008 levels amongst Democrats and Democrat leaning independents
