Two children have died and nine others are injured after a stabbing in Southport, north of Liverpool, this morning.

All of the nine children who were injured were stabbed and six are in a critical condition.

Two adults are also in a critical condition.

Merseyside Police Chief Constable Serena Kennedy said: "We believe that the adults who were injured were bravely trying to protect the children who were being attacked."

The King has said he and the Queen are "profoundly shocked" by the "utterly horrific" knife attack which killed two children in Southport.

"We send our most heartfelt condolences, prayers and deepest sympathies to the families and loved ones to those who have so tragically lost their lives, and to all those affected by this truly appalling attack."

Southport stabbings latest: Boy, 17, arrested after children killed in stabbings at dance school during Taylor Swift event

A 17-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the incident in Southport, Merseyside Police has said.

The teenager from the nearby village of Banks will remain in police custody to be questioned, it added.
 
Officers have also confirmed the stabbings are not being treated as terror-related and they are not looking for anyone else in connection with what happened.

"At this early stage, enquiries are ongoing to establish the motive for this tragic incident and we would urge people not to speculate while the investigation is ongoing," the force said.

Earlier today, police said a male had been arrested and a knife had been seized.

LONDON (AP) — Bloodied children ran screaming from a dance and yoga class “like a scene from a horror movie” to escape a teenager’s savage knife attack that killed two children and wounded 11 other people Monday in northwest England, police and witnesses said.

A 17-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder in the stabbing in Southport, a seaside town near Liverpool, Merseyside Police said. The motive was not clear, but police said detectives were not treating the attack as terror-related.

Nine children were wounded — six of them in critical condition — in the latest headline-grabbing attack amid a recent rise in knife crime that has stoked anxieties and led to calls for the government to do more to clamp down on bladed weapons.

Two wounded adults who tried to shield the pupils were in critical condition, police said. ...

Hero woman saved the lives of 16 children during the stabbing attack in Southport, UK yesterday. Leanne Lucas, who organized the Taylor-Swift themed dance workshop is currently in critical condition after stepping in as she ‘bravely tried to protect them.’

A relative of Lucas, who is currently hospitalized in critical condition with severe stab wounds said “She's only tiny, she wouldn't have stood a chance against a man with a knife, but she just wanted to protect those children.”

2 children lost their lives and 11 were hospitalized, 6 in critical condition after a 17 year old went on a stabbing spree.

The UK teen accused of fatally stabbing three little girls and wounding 10 others at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class was identified for the first time Thursday as Axel Rudakubana.

Rudakubana, 17, was born in Cardiff, Wales, to Rwandan parents, according to the BBC.

He is charged with the murders of Bebe King, 6, Elsie Dot Stancombe, 7, and Alice Dasilva Aguiar, 9, as well as the attempted murder of eight other children, a yoga teacher, and a businessman.

Liverpool Judge Andrew Menary said that despite not being an adult, the boy can be named because he will turn 18 next week. ...

A clean-up operation is under way after a night of violence during which four police officers were hospitalised and 10 people arrested.

Beer cans and bricks were thrown at riot police outside a mosque in Sunderland and a Citizens Advice office was torched.

North East Mayor Kim McGuinness said she was appalled by the "thuggery" and attacks on police.

Friday's chaotic evening was the latest outbreak of rioting across England following the killing of three young girls in Southport on Monday.  ...

Asked on BBC Breakfast whether there was any prior knowledge of events or protests planned for Sunderland, Ms McGuinness said: "We saw that these far-right groups were advertising what they called a peaceful protest yesterday in Sunderland.

"That was anything but peaceful.

"It was out and out crime and violence and the police response was strong, protecting a mosque and really having to stand up to very sustained crime and violence from these thugs." ...
