I am on the record here saying the acoustics are messed up.
In the original vid there are three big reports, then a smattering of quiet fire, with at least two more biig reports (I think three)
The quiet(er) fire sounds like that .223 from 130 yds away. But that doesn't explain the loud(er) reports.
To underscore that, the VCM tape - The one where you can hear someone calling Crooks by name, in that you can hear him shooting - a rat-a-tat in quick succession - a pretty quiet rifle, like a .223 would be. I counted eight shots, like I said, in quick succession.
The loud reports sound like bigger iron. Somebody said .308... Somebody said 300 winmag. I can buy that... Though the sound is pretty skinny for a 300 win.
I ain't been around a whole lot of .223/.243/5.56 stuff myself - That's just a varmint gun around here. But I have been around em... .223 particular. Louder than a .22LR, but not by that much. You and me, we could maintain a conversation in a regular voice while poppin them off - I know because I have done it, shooting after coyotes.
So I have a hard time believing those big reports are the shooter.
