Trump to meet face-to-face with this top Republican leader for first time in nearly four years
Trump is returning the nation's capital on Thursday to meet with congressional Republicans
By Paul Steinhauser , Julia Johnson , Tyler Olson Fox News
Published June 12, 2024 5:35pm EDT

Longtime Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell says he'll be in attendance on Thursday as Senate Republicans meet in the nation's capital with former President Donald Trump.

It will be the first time Trump and McConnell will have seen each other in person in nearly four years.

Trump, the GOP's presumptive presidential nominee, is holding behind closed doors meetings Thursday morning with House Republicans and Thursday afternoon with Senate Republicans.

And McConnell reiterated to reporters on Wednesday that "I'll be at the meeting tomorrow."

McConnell and Trump haven't talked since December 2020, as their working relationship turned frosty following President Biden's election victory over then-President Trump.

McConnell formally recognized Biden's presidential election victory after the former vice president was confirmed the winner by the Electoral College on Dec. 15, 2020.

A few weeks later, McConnell said Trump was "morally responsible" for the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol by Trump supporters who aimed to upend congressional certification of Biden's White House win.

Johnson, Trump, GOP plot ambitious agenda hinged on total control of government
by Alexander Bolton - 06/12/24 5:51 PM ET

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) met with Senate Republicans on Wednesday to begin setting an ambitious agenda for Washington if former President Trump is reelected and Republicans win back control of the Senate and keep their House majority.

GOP lawmakers are growing increasingly confident about their prospects in the November election given President Biden’s low approval numbers and want to have a bold agenda ready to go in January.

Feeling the Senate majority is within their reach, Senate Republicans are discussing what proposals to include in a special budget reconciliation package — or multiple packages — to get around the filibuster, which requires most legislation to pass the upper chamber with 60 votes.

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), who is running to become the next Senate GOP leader, said Johnson told senators he wants “to be prepared to hit the ground running” if Republicans control the White House and Congress next year.

“He’s pretty clear that they want to try to go big, and that means more than just extending the tax cuts,” Cornyn said.

Johnson pitched GOP senators on tax cuts, spending cuts and regulatory reforms during a lunchtime meeting in the Lyndon Baines Johnson Room just off the Senate floor.

“It’s six months out, we’ve got to prepare,” Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla.) said of the desire among GOP lawmakers to put together an agenda in case they control the White House and both chambers of Congress in January.

Good -- they're useless anyways.  As for meeting with McConnell, why?  I thought he was stepping down anyways and he's also useless.  Has Trump not learned anything???

Some Republicans will skip Trump’s visit to Capitol
By
Ramsey Touchberry
June 13, 2024 7:00 am
.

There will be notable absences on Thursday when presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump meets with Senate Republicans in Washington, D.C., for the first time since leaving the White House.

Some centrist Republican senators who oppose the former president told the Washington Examiner they plan to skip the meeting due to unspecified scheduling conflicts, much to the chagrin of GOP leaders who are billing the event as a chance to build party unity heading into the election.

Notably, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) will attend despite his frosty relationship with the former president and no contact between the two since before the 2021 Capitol riot.

“I said three years ago, right after the Capitol was attacked, that I would support our nominee, regardless of who it was, including him,” McConnell told reporters Wednesday. “I’ve said earlier this year I support him. He’s earned the nomination by the voters all across the country, and of course, I’ll be at the meeting tomorrow.”

McConnell endorsed Trump in March, a stunning reversal from previously blaming him for “disgraceful” acts on Jan. 6, 2021, and after Trump’s attacks against the senator’s wife, former Trump Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, that have been panned as racist.

Sens. Susan Collins (R-ME) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) told the Washington Examiner they won’t attend because of busy schedules. Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) said he won’t either because he has a flight to catch.

McConnell isn't letting his personal feelings override what he sees as best for the country.

But I suspect he's going to be a long way from being buddies with Trump.  Nor should he.

@mtgreenee

President Trump is the leader of the Republican Party, and everyone outside of Washington, DC knows it, but that hasn’t always been the case inside this city.

Today, that all changed. President Trump received standing ovation after standing ovation.

President Trump told us he’s willing to work hard to make sure everyone gets re-elected because he’s committed to not just winning the White House, but the Senate and the House as well.

He was candid, funny, direct, and called many of us out by name. He didn’t even use teleprompters or notecards. He’s as real and genuine as they get.

Maybe it will be a little easier this time if he doesn't have to fight so many members of his own party.

Being a bit puzzled...how does he go about canning the entire '7th floors' of the FBI, CIA and NSA??

How does he take Barack Obama and Valerie Jarrett into custody?

Because it HAS to be done to stop the bullshit.

Once Barry is behind bars, the rest will trip over themselves running for the door.

Trump attracts weak co-dependent people desperate for his approval.  Just look at Nikki Haley and Bob Barr.  How long before Mike Pence grovels to kiss Trump's ring at Mar-a-Lago?

The thing with His Majesty, Tangerine Mussolini, is that there is always at least one lackey / minion / sycophant who will do anything, without question or concern, to earn the King's personal approval.

... could be a lawyer who takes out a home equity loan to buy a pornstar's silence
... could be a mob that attacks the Capitol
... could be a lone wolf that shoots up an FBI office
... could be an Internet troll that swats a prosecutors home address

Like a LifeTime Movie of the Week, the Republicans always return to Donald to be subjected to more of his abuse.

The real danger is not Trump himself.  He is only 1 out of 333,000,000 Americans.  The peril lies in the weak minds who put aside law, conscience, Constitution, God, family, and common decency to prove loyalty to Trump, only to receive no loyalty in return.

Anyways, my vote in FL isn't going to matter -- he'll take FL and IF he doesn't that would come as a complete upset and he won't be re-elected.

He can fire all political appointees day one. (Recall what WJC did that to every sitting U. S. Attorney shortly after he was sworn in.) Those who are permanent government service employees are much more difficult until congress changes the law which is why both Bill Clinton and Barack Obama spend months at the end of their terms transitioning appointees to permanent government service.

@libertybele

I consider anyone who announces -- multiple times --- zero support for Donald Trump and zero chance of changing one's mind, who continues to diminish Trump's accomplishments, misrepresent his policies and motives, and predict disappointment, doom and gloom if Trump's elected to be actively helping Joe Biden win.

IMHO, if you "do care what happens to this country",  having clearly made your decision known, at this point you would stand down, allow others to decide for themselves, and stop greasing Biden's path to victory.

Again, this is my opinion.  I am sorry -- not sorry for it.

I believe you care what happens to this country. It has nothing to do whether one votes for Trump or not. The claim from those that not voting for Trump means you support Biden will intensify when and if it becomes clear that his chances to win will diminish as it becomes a real contest.

There is no way I'll vote for Biden. If Trump wants my vote, he needs to earn it. His his record as president on the economy  and his proposals threaten the economy as much as Biden's

Acknowledge the mistakes from his first term and abandon his economic populism. It didn't work the first time and wont work the second. Anyone who wants to put higher costs on consumers and business, for example,  should have their economic acumen questioned

https://www.axios.com/2020/01/30/us-gdp-2019-q4

U.S. gross domestic product grew at a 2.1% annual rate in the final quarter of last year, the Commerce Department said on Thursday. For all of 2019, economic growth came in at 2.3% — less than the 2.9% in 2018.

Why it matters: The initial estimates from the government show that 2019 was the slowest pace of economic growth since Trump took office. The boost from the tax cuts gave way to pain from the trade war. Exports slumped last year, while uncertain business leaders held off on spending.

Details: Trump succeeded in fundamentally shifting the U.S. trade balance. Net exports added nearly 1.5 percentage points to GDP in the fourth quarter, though experts warn the gain was likely unsustainable.

Stephen Gallagher, chief U.S. economist at Societe Generale, said he expected a "major reversal" of the trade balance in the first quarter that would deduct one percentage point from first quarter GDP.
He also renewed the institution's forecast of a recession this year.
By the numbers: Q4 marked the third straight quarter of declining business investment — i.e. corporations investing in new equipment or factories.

There was a notable decline in inventories while overall gross private domestic investment fell 6.1% during the quarter.
Consumer spending is still solid, but showed some signs of slowing. The rate of spending was 1.8% in Q4, a drop-off from the 3.2% in the prior quarter.
What they're saying: The report drew the ire of trade groups opposed to Trump's tariffs on China, which remain largely in place even after the "phase one" deal.

“Tariffs are paid by American consumers and businesses, and prevented the U.S. economy from reaching its full potential last year," according to a statement from Americans for Free Trade, a coalition of businesses, farmers and manufacturers that's launched a multimillion dollar campaign against Trump's tariffs.

"It’s clear the trade war and tariffs are still impacting American businesses, workers, and consumers."
The bottom line: 2019 GDP came in above the economy's postrecession average of around 2% growth, as Marketwatch points out. Still, annual growth under Trump hasn't hit the administration's promise of 3%.

Any MAGA who wants to take a shot at why this, for example, was all good and deserving of a second term I'd be interested.  From most indicators, we would have gone into some kind of economic decline even without COVID due to his tariffs alone

I mean, you guys leap right to locking up without even discussing the specific crimes or waiting for an actual trial.   They've been after Trump since 2015, and to this day, he hasn't spend a moment behind bars.

  • I'll make Mincemeat out of 'em"
I will thank you for stopping putting words I never uttered in my mouth! @Maj. Bill Martin

Okay, I thought here you were agreeing with @DCPatriot that Obama and Jarrett should be taken "into custody", and that you thought Ken Paxton was the right guy to do it:

How does he take Barack Obama and Valerie Jarrett into custody?  Because it HAS to be done to stop the bullshit. Once Barry is behind bars, the rest will trip over themselves running for the door.

That depends on who knows what and is willing to spill the beans with evidence as well as who becomes AG. I nominate the current Texas AG Ken Paxton.

Agreed! And you should include James Comey and Eric Holder as well.

If that's not what you meant, my apologies:

...hmmm.....Trump looks much more enthusiastic than Cruz and perhaps I'm reading more into the picture, but Cruz's thumbs up isn't too exuberant either.

Cruz looks pretty enthusiastic here:

Perhaps my tendency to write in a form of shorthand was misleading. I'm a rule of law guy, always have been, and always will be.

It was me!  I'm Spartacus!!

How about charging him with insurrection and high treason...running a shadow government out of the Kalorama neighborhood in Washington, DC?

A simple pre-dawn raid by Seal Team Six could confiscate their computer servers, while simultaneously grabbing all the data gleaned from the NSA near Fort Meade in Laurel, Maryland.

Bleep your necessary warrants and civil rights.  Any middle school student in a non-public school knows who's running this shit show for the past 4 years.

  • Dems-greatest existential threat to USA republic!
The AXIOM...HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF...has proven time and again to be very accurate.

Thus, all of you that think Trump and/or his DOJ will go after anyone, and I do mean

             A   N   Y   O   N   E

...you are delusional.  If anything, Trump has proven to be part of the Swamp, but he is subtle about it, not in your face.  Not in one million years would Trump and/or his DOJ go after the ONLY BLACK POTUS.  Get f***ing real.  Nor Biden and his entire idiocracy of morons.  Just not going to happen.

And then there is the unlikely outcome that Trump gets elected, come 2PM the day after the election, when the oil burning hacks get busy changing ones and zeroes, and every state Trump was ahead in via polls all of a sudden all come in for Biden, with a margin of 10,000 to 25,000 votes.

Trump will not win unless Soros and Buffett want him to win, otherwise, it is Wrecking Ball Joe, or any one of the many cadavers of the Democommie Party.

And should by some odd unlikely chance they decide NOT to fix the election, and Trump wins, believe me, he will be one of the most lame duck POTUSes of all time.  He will quickly grow tired of the Republicans who all appear to be RINOs, not supporting anything he wants.  Don't hold your breath for the wall being completed.  Trump's policies will all be via EOs, all undone within days of the next Democommie taking office.  And it is repeat and recycle, with some of the same morons returning that were part of the Biden Idiocracy.

Should Trump get elected, my big hope is that he does not keep 1,400+ Biden appointees in position 1.5 years after he takes office.  Hopefully, he learned that painful lesson replacing Obama and leaving his appointees in position.  That was pure idiocy.  My whole industry was nuked by Obama when he was elected.  I am talking about the boutique management consulting industry.  Trump would be well served to purge every Obama/Biden appointee and use consultants displaced by Obama(some 98% being strong conservatives) to come in and streamline every department they run.  We are talking about billions in savings if they are left to do their job properly.

I say these folks would reduce government by 50%, and what is left will run far better than anything prior.  The waste in government is actually beyond comprehension!
