Drinking Water Warning Issued Nationwide

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued an enforcement alert Monday urging water utility systems to take immediate actions to protect the nation's drinking water from cyberattacks.

According to the EPA, recent federal inspections revealed that 70 percent of U.S. water systems inspected do not fully comply with requirements in the Safe Drinking Water Act. The agency added that some systems have "critical cybersecurity vulnerabilities, such as default passwords that have not been updated and single logins that can easily be compromised."

Possible impacts of cyberattacks include interruptions to water treatment and storage and damage to pumps and valves, along with alteration of chemical levels to hazardous amounts, the EPA said.

"In many cases, systems are not doing what they are supposed to be doing, which is to have completed a risk assessment of their vulnerabilities that includes cybersecurity and to make sure that plan is available and informing the way they do business," EPA Deputy Administrator Janet McCabe said in a press release.

When reached by Newsweek via email Monday afternoon, the EPA pointed to additional information in today's press release and enforcement alert.......................

Anyone who drinks tap water as their primary hydration source is in trouble, IMO.

I would at only one place, where I grew up and the water is from a deep artesian well.

Otherwise, it is distilled or filtered (by me), usually.

Same here

Before I swore an oath to Deer Park Spring Water, bought my water at a place who used the Reverse Osmosis system.  Stainless steel machines as big as a Volkswagen Beetle. Bought it in 5 gallon plastic jugs.

As I aged into my 60s and 70's, they were too heavy to cart around...especially when you live on a top floor walk-up condo.

I don't drink tap water either, but with a looming water crisis, how long is it going to be before spring water sources and well sources dry up???? Perhaps you won't be able to get bottled water. I finally bit the bullet and had several 5 gallon and 3 gallon jugs of spring water delivered.  I have some stored on water racks, but I've noticed that the taste is different than what I've been purchasing in the stores in smaller jugs.  Same brand and supposedly from the same spring water source.

The reverse osmosis plants can be hijacked as well.

under control of computers that are not connected to anything else?

Filtering capability is probably more useful than stored water. for long term purposes. I can throw together a water still here at home. Also decent rain catchment - 35 or 50 gallon food grade barrels can catch a whole lotta rain.

Here in Arizona, shut down a couple of primary sources, the Colorado River and/or Salt River things would go very bad very quickly for the Phoenix metro area. There is essentially no reserve storage within the metro area.

Not me, I drink tap water day in and day out.... it's good water here. Family (father's side) owns the spring where the water comes from.

I recall the argument back then...that rainwater collected on your own property is NOT yours to keep.

...something to do with "water rights", etc..  A barrel of rainwater becomes a pond; becomes a lake.

Haven't heard of the law ever being enforced, however.

They're trying the same thing out here using 'native' water rights to supersede legal water rights... First nation rights (they were here first) supersede everything...

But out here, dumbass laws are summarily ignored.
It's a Western thing.
