Interesting, @240B   Didn't realize that.  Thought cotton was a much more dramatic product back in the mid 1800's.
It is not about cotton, it is about the number of land/farm owners. At that time, America is what we would call today 'sparsely populated'. America was wide open and mostly undeveloped. Farms and ranches were huge. So a lot of cotton was being produced from fewer farms. Fewer farms equates to few actual, 'slave owners'.

Interesting, @240B   Didn't realize that.  Thought cotton was a much more dramatic product back in the mid 1800's.
Large operations could support large numbers of slaves. Smaller farms had few, if any, as the investment was substantial. Gold was only about $20 an ounce, and slaves were hundreds of even thousands of dollars each, in gold. DO the math in today's dollars: $500 was 25 ounces of gold, today roughly $50,000 Each bought slave was the price of a new car or more.

Poorer families did what poor families in labor intensive economies do: they had lots of kids. Compounded by problems with childbirth and sanitation, babies had fairly high mortality rates, and infections and sepsis were killers (no antibiotics).

But most folks couldn't afford slaves because their farms were not big enough because they did not have the labor. Kind of a circular problem. BTW ten acres of tobacco was a lot. Still is, because there is no machine to harvest the plants. Cotton didn't just support farmers, though, the crop supported shipping companies, mills, gins to remove seeds, and even though the North set up the laws so the machinery to build a textile industry in the south almost had to be purchased from northerners or foreigners who wanted to keep the markup between raw cotton or wool and finished fabrics and products, the South still had a budding textile industry at the onset of hostilities. While slavery has been given top billing as a casus belli by northern historians, tariffs which affected the south's ability to industrialize were  another factor. One of the reasons for the Anaconda Plan was to cut off trade between the South and virtually anywhere else, which only established a rollicking and overpriced black market in virtually anything the South could not produce for itself, not to mention commerce raiders (CSS Alabama, for instance) and blockade runners. That also led to the development of the first purpose built submarine to sink an enemy vessel and the ironclad ram CSS Virginia, built on the hull of the Merrimac.

You can believe the Fable, or really dig in and realize the situation was complicated. One thing led to another, sometimes seemingly unrelated.  As a side note, about the time the Confederacy ran out of gold and silver for the black markets (to obtain supplies), things got really tough and the war ended soon after. Ever wonder who got rich off of that trade? (me, too)

@Slide Rule

"It ain't who  you know,it's who  you  blow!" was a common expression in the army when I joined in 1964.

Miss Miley is proof of truth.

EVERY time I see that posing POS wearing a CIB I want to puke. He got awarded that as a staff officer so  far from any actual combat he might  as well have been in the US.

If I ever get close enough to him to do it,I am going to rip that CIB off his chest,and damn the consequences.

Did not know that.  I'd figure anyone getting that 4th star  would have at least one combat assignment.
I display the Confederate Battle Flag in honor of my great great great grandfathers who spilled blood at Wilson's Creek and Shiloh.  5 others served in the WBTS with honor too.  Note:  Posts may also be allegorical in nature, and not literal.

@catfish1957

SEEMS like his "Rabbi" in the Defense Department always made sure Miss Mily was off to one school or another when there was any danger involved,or was assigned to the staff of the General in Charge.

I MAY be wrong,but I THINK he got his CIB while a staff officer in the Muddle East. He and the other West Point staff officers got close enough to combat one  of them thought he heard an explosion,so the General Officer signed off on it.

BTW,IIRC,I read that he was once the commanding General of Special Forces,and I would bet the farm he never went on a deployment to anywhere dangerous with an A Team.

Today's US Military is as corrupt as any 3rd World Nation,and the rot started at the head.

You can meet really,really good people in the military up to field grade officer,but after that it is all homos and "made men with political connections who know how to follow orders" unless it is a command in charge of stuff like managing surplus supplies who will NEVER be promoted beyond 1 star. They are "outsiders".

@catfish1957

EVERYBODY in the US Army (and I am guessing,the other services,also) that gets deployed to a war zone is considered to be in  a combat zone.

A combat zone assignment  is NOT the same thing as being in combat.

This is NOT a slam on supply,medical aid,cooks,mechanics,etc,etc,etc that do a GREAT job keeping the military going and healthy. I have heard it said that  it takes 10 support people working behind the lines to keep one combat solider going,and I believe it. These people do a GREAT job and get next to no  credit for doing it,while SOME of of them are exposed to enemy fire and never get any recognition for it.

Granted,this has NO linkage to our own  borders because the politicians in power seem to LOVE open borders in America.

Scientists, like all discoverers of truth, have always asked, "What?” “How?” “Why?” “What if?” and “Why not?” Questioning science is science.

(me, too)

Excellent post @Smokin Joe Its good to know that there are still some around who didn't get everything they know about history from post 1865 public school history books.

Nope.

In general,they were known as "Carpet baggers",but the truth is they were just the front men for wealthy Yankee banking families.

The Civil War was about money,and nothing else. Slavery was just an excuse the public would swallow. The origins were the south deciding to ship cotton and other products to Europe though southern ports instead of paying the yankee banks to ship it through norther ports for them. It was primarily the big banks in NYC that handled all the trade back then,and they wanted to keep getting their cuts of ALL the international trade.

There are more, not less, slaves in the world today. CRACKED COM There are more slaves in the world today (around 27 million) than were in America just before the Civil War, and possibly more than any other time in known human history.

Yeah, well, only about 4% of the African Slave trade came to the US.
But you'd think this nation was the only one to have slavery, ever.

Seventeen Techniques for Truth Suppression

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

I display the Confederate Battle Flag in honor of my great great great grandfathers who spilled blood at Wilson's Creek and Shiloh.  5 others served in the WBTS with honor too.  Note:  Posts may also be allegorical in nature, and not literal.
