She was amazing.

Enjoyed her so much in Downton Abbey.
You're everywhere I go, I am not alone
You call me as Your own to know You and be known.
You are holy!
And I fall down on my knees.
I can feel Your presence here with me.
Suddenly I'm lost within Your beauty,
Caught up in the wonder of Your touch.
Here in this moment I surrender to Your love.

BREAKING: Singer, songwriter & actor Kris Kristofferson dead at 88

Sep 29, 2024 3:22pm PT
Kris Kristofferson, Country Music Legend and ‘A Star Is Born’ Leading Man, Dies at 88

Kris Kristofferson, who attained success as both a groundbreaking country music singer-songwriter and a Hollywood film and TV star, died Saturday at home in Maui, Hawaii. No cause of death was given but he was said to be surrounded by family. He was 88.

Said his family in a statement, “It is with a heavy heart that we share the news our husband/father/grandfather, Kris Kristofferson, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 28 at home. We’re all so blessed for our time with him. Thank you for loving him all these many years, and when you see a rainbow, know he’s smiling down at us all.”

Kristofferson had already spent several modestly successful years in Music City’s song mills by the time he broke through as the author of such No. 1 country hits as “For the Good Times” (Ray Price, 1970), “Sunday Morning Coming Down” (Johnny Cash, 1970) and “Help Me Make It Through the Night” (Sammi Smith, 1971). His song “Me and Bobby McGee” became a posthumous No. 1 pop hit for his former paramour Janis Joplin in 1971.  ...

One of my favorite songs, ever. Sad, evocative and uplifting, all at once. RIP, Kris and Godspeed.
"The most terrifying force of death, comes from the hands of Men who wanted to be left Alone. They try, so very hard, to mind their own business and provide for themselves and those they love. They resist every impulse to fight back, knowing the forced and permanent change of life that will come from it. Kris Kristofferson. I know his name but not much else. I see he dated Bawabaw Streisand the multimillionaire Marxist.

Check out his biography above.  It seems that he came from a Conservative family that wanted him to pursue a military career in the Army.  He became an officer and a helicopter pilot and served a single tour in Germany before being offered the professorship of literature at West Point.  Something in him changed, and it being the 1960s, he lurched left, quit the Army, and broke with his family.  Spent sometime on the oil rigs in Louisiana as a helicopter pilot and went to Nashville to try and make it as a songwriter and singer, doing odd jobs to get by.  He was, more or less, given his big break by June and Johnny Cash, and became one of the best songwriters in country music.  He did indeed have very high intelligence and was a Rhodes scholar at Oxford before being commissioned into the Army.  His rebellion against his family and Conservative upbringing though has never been fully explained...he never liked to talk about it.

I hope this was true for him. I never saw any fruit of a Christian life, but I believe he did have an legitimate encounter. I surely hope so. Perhaps as he got closer to the end of his life, he made some changes. There are so many who have passed on that I'd like to hear in God's heavenly choir. He's one of them.

He was another one of those who was a better writer than singer, but there was a certain something about his voice that made him easier to listen to than other singers who aren't technically very good.

I saw Mr. Kristofferson a couple of times, 1971-72, very early in his career.
At that point, I don't think even he knew yet where he was headed.

One of his I liked:
(recited from memory)
=============
Like all the fair maidens
Who've laid down beside him
She knew in her heart that he lied
Nothing that I could have said
Could have saved her
No matter how hard that she tried
'Cause she'll offer her charms
To the darkness and danger
Of somethin' that she's never known
And open her arms at the smile of a stranger
Who'll love her and leave her alone.

And you know, he's the devil
He's everything that I ain't
Hidin' intentions of evil
Under the smile of a saint.
All he's good for is gettin' in trouble
And shiftin' his share of the blame
And some people swear he's my double
And some even say we're the same

But the silver tongued devil's got nothin' to lose
I'll only live 'til I die
We take our own chances
And pay our own dues...
... that silver tongued devil and I

Yes, Johnny Cash got him his break. I think Kris was doing editing in a basement of the recording studio.

Hall of Fame basketball player Dikembe Mutombo dies at 58
By Debra Worley
Published: Sep. 30, 2024 at 11:14 AM EDT
(Gray News/AP via KMOV) – Hall of Fame basketball player Dikembe Mutombo has died from brain cancer.

He was 58 years old.

“Dikembe Mutombo was simply larger than life,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement posted on X.

“On the court, he was one of the greatest shot blockers and defensive players in the history of the NBA. Off the floor, he poured his heart and soul into helping others.”  ...

Mutombo, one of the best defensive players in NBA history, spent 18 seasons in the organization playing for Denver, Atlanta, Houston, Philadelphia, New York and the then-NewJersey Nets.

The 7-foot-2 center out of Georgetown was an eight-time All-Star, four-time defensive player of the year, three-time All-NBA selection and went into the Hall of Fame in 2015 after averaging 9.8 points and 10.3 rebounds per game for his career. ...

He spoke nine languages and founded the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation in 1997, concentrating on improving health, education and quality of life for the people in the Congo.  ...
You may have seen him in TV ads, if you aren't an NBA fan.

I didn't realize the guy was 83.

I thought he was still in his 70s.

Guy should've been put in the Hall of Fame the moment MLB started signing deals with gambling books.

Agreed. Now that the professional sports leagues are in bed with gambling enterprises, the justification for excluding Rose from the HOF is not so convincing.

Will he be installed posthumously? Who knows, but wouldn't that be just like the sniveling pukes in the MLB to wait until he can no longer appreciate the honor for himself.

Rose’s legacy is complicated for sure - and I have never been a fan. I just never liked the guy which is subjective, of course. What isn’t subjective is he knowingly and willfully violated some of the most sacred tenets of the times in sport. It doesn’t matter how those rules may be being bent today. He betrayed the sport without question.

He doesn’t belong in the Hall. Just my view.

Professional baseball, as I knew it in my playing days, is no more and that's a crying shame! Nothing more than a mass media entertainment enterprise now. Just like pro football and professional wrestling.

And exactly what is the Hall of Fame supposed to be about if not those very things? Honest question.

What I hate about major league baseball is that they are happy to grade on a curve when it benefits them. They're really strict about things or they're willing overlook certain things. I'm not going to leave MLB because of it, but I'm certainly going to gripe about it from time to time. This is one of those times.

Based on stats and on-field achievements, Rose is Hall worthy. No doubt. But, he violates other criteria. His violations went to the integrity of the game, of Baseball. He came up woefully short in that metric.

His being banned from baseball for gambling certainly could/should be considered separately from his outstanding skill and performance as a player. Placing bets didn't diminish his play, so it's still arguable that he should be in the HOF.

I come down on your side @mountaineer with no disrespect for my good friend @Lando Lincoln .

The way I see it what a player does ON THE FIELD over the course of his career and what happened elsewhere are two completely different issues.

I've never been to the HOF, so I don't know what the displays or plaques look like, but they could recount his achievements - hits, etc. - and still could add a few words about his banning.

What Rose did was while he was an active participant in baseball. That is the basis of my hardline view.

I look at the steroid era similarly. Bonds, McGwire, Sosa, Clemens and others knowingly violated the rules and impacted the integrity of the game while they were active. They can buy tickets to visit the Hall in my world.

What the steroid boys did affected their actual baseball performance, whereas I don't know that there's evidence Rose played differently in games on which he'd placed a bet. I don't know. Not taking a hard line on it. As an old Pirates fan, Rose was always the enemy. ;)

I believe he was a Manager when he placed bets on his home team.

Pete Rose was a great ballplayer.  RIP!  But, he should NEVER be considered for entrance into the Hall of Fame.   He tarnished his reputation by betting on games he was managing.  He knew he was violating the rules, and so his being blocked for entrance into the HOF was something he knew he was jeopardizing.

I attended a convention with CINCOM in Cincinnati when Rose was manager of the ball team.  I was one of six folks that won the ability to go down on the field and meet the ballplayers before the game one night they arranged for a visit.  Rose was not friendly in the least.  He hated our being on the field, that was clearly evident, while players were super friendly, signing balls for the six of us.

I also was a Pirates fan, and went to many games between the Pirates and Reds.  I respected Rose as a player, for he was always a real threat to put runs up on the scoreboard.  But what he did was inexcusable.  He should be forgotten completely.  He has no place to be remembered as the great players of the game.  NONE!!!

John Amos, ‘Good Times’ Dad, Dies at 84

Quote

John Amos, the TV writer turned Emmy-nominated actor who starred as the stoic father on Good Times before he was fired from the landmark sitcom for objecting to stereotypes and admittedly letting his temper get the best of him, has died. He was 84.

Amos died Aug. 21 in Los Angeles of natural causes, his son, K.C. Amos, announced.

“It is with heartfelt sadness that I share with you that my father has transitioned,” he said in a statement. “He was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold… and he was loved the world over. Many fans consider him their TV father. He lived a good life. His legacy will live on in his outstanding works in television and film as an actor.”

John Amos was a fine actor. One of the most heartbreaking scenes I have ever seen was in Roots when they sold his daughter and he held his wife. He didn't have to speak, his face said it all.

RIP John.

I read one of the obits of John Amos. Really a remarkable man of great intellect.
