Jerry West, a West Virginia icon and one of the greatest basketball players of all time, has died at 86.

A release from the Los Angeles Clippers said West died peacefully Wednesday morning at the age of 86 with his wife, Karen, by his side.

A native of Kanawha County who hailed from Cheylan, West is perhaps the most decorated athlete from West Virginia. ...

West went on to play 14 seasons for the Los Angeles Lakers from 1960-1974 and was then part of the organization for nearly three more decades. As a player, he made the All-Star Game each of his 14 seasons in the NBA and was a 12-time All-NBA selection.

A member of the Basketball Hall of Fame, West won a NBA championship with the Lakers in 1972 and an additional six while in the organization’s front office. He was an architect of the organization’s 10 championships in the 1980s and 2000s. ...

It looked to me like he was trying to pull up (by the distribution of the debris vs a straight in entry), but ran out of air.

Neil Goldschmidt dead: Former Democratic Oregon governor tarnished by child sex scandal dies

Neil Goldschmidt, once a beloved politician known for revamping Oregon’s economy but who fell from grace after the public’s discovery of his sexual abuse of a neighborhood girl, died at 83 from heart failure on Wednesday.

He died in his Portland, Oregon, home surrounded by family two days before his 84th birthday.

Goldschmidt’s admitted sexual abuse of a 14-year-old neighbor girl began in the 1970s when he was mayor of Portland. At the time, he became the nation’s youngest big-city mayor, responsible for revitalizing the downtown area, per Oregon Live, and he was seen as a rising star in the Democratic Party. ...

The Oregonian published a story in May 2004 that included a partial confession from Goldschmidt, and reporting from the Willamette Week later uncovered more details behind Goldschmidt’s scandal.  ...

The girl he abused is now a 50-something or 60-something woman (assuming she is still alive). I doubt she is mourning his death.

Al Kresta, a longtime Catholic radio host, author, and founder and president of Ave Maria Radio, died Saturday at his Michigan home after a battle with liver cancer. He was 72.

A former evangelical Protestant who rose to prominence as a radio host before his conversion to Catholicism in 1992, Kresta’s voice was heard on hundreds of radio stations daily, including EWTN Catholic Radio, via Ave Maria’s flagship program, “Kresta in the Afternoon.”

He was one of the people that aided my reversion to the Catholic Church.

FireHouse Singer C.J. Snare Dead at 64



“Today is a sad day for Rock N Roll,” the surviving members wrote. “It is with great sorrow we are letting the world know we have lost our brother: CJ Snare, the rock and roll warrior, lead vocalist, and a founding member of Firehouse. CJ snare passed unexpectedly at home Friday night, April 5, 2024.

As a fan of a long suffering team in the NL West 1960/70's (Astros), the "M" tandem of McCovey/Mays/Marichal made for some tough summers.  Then add the Dodgers and the Reds?

Donald Sutherland, Hunger Games and Kelly's Heroes actor, dies

Donald Sutherland, who appeared in films such as The Hunger Games and Kelly's Heroes, has died.

The actor, who was 88, also starred in MASH and won an Emmy for Citizen X.

His son, fellow actor Kiefer Sutherland, posted on X: "With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away.

"I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived."

Deadline reported Sutherland in Miami died on Thursday after a long illness.

Sutherland was downright scary as a genocidal maniac President Snow in the Hunger Games. He played one truly frightening and complex character. IMO his greatest role.

Kinky Friedman dies at 79

The legendary outlaw singer and lead vocalist for the Texas Jewboys proved himself as adept at maudlin country ballads such as "Sold American" as he was better-known for his biting satirical songs, most famously "They Ain't Makin' Jews Like Jesus Anymore" and the song that earned him the ire of feminists everywhere (and got him banned in Buffalo for four decades), "Get Your Biscuits in the Oven and Your Buns in the Bed." Relatively liberal by Texas standards, he ran a third party candidacy for the governor of that state in 2006, finishing with over 12% of the vote.

Friedman died June 27 of Parkinson's disease.
