Fox News’s Bret Baier to host televised forum with three Speaker candidates
by Emily Brooks and Dominick Mastrangelo - 10/06/23 9:44 AM ET

Fox News’s Bret Baier will host a televised forum for the three candidates for Speaker of the House — an unusual move that follows Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s (R-Calif.) unprecedented ouster as Speaker.

House Majority Leader Scalise (R-La.), House Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), and Republican Study Committee Chair Kevin Hern (R-Okla.) would participate in the event on Monday at 6 p.m.

The three men will all appear on the same stage together, according to two sources familiar with the plans, a format that Fox News is billing as a “joint interview” rather than a “debate.”

The network said Baier will “press the congressmen on who should be the next Speaker of the House and discuss the issues facing Congress and the Republican party going forward.”

Scalise and Jordan, who former President Trump endorsed for Speaker overnight on Friday, have both officially announced their candidacies. Hern, who leads the largest conservative caucus in the House, is considering a formal bid but has not yet launched one, aiming to contact every member of the House Republican Conference before announcing his decision.

This should be good.  I'd like to hear from each of them what, if any, promises or pledges they have made or expect to make to the caucus.

And specifically, I'd like to hear what each of them has to say about whether they'd be willing to support at CR if necessary to avert a shutdown.

Why, exactly? Did we suddenly get a vote on the matter?

I'm not sure why this is relevant to the general public, other than just as a spectator sport.  It's a House matter upon which the masses have no say whatsoever.

Televised Fox News Speaker forum called off after candidates pull out
by Emily Brooks - 10/06/23 1:17 PM ET

Plans for a televised Fox News forum with three contenders for House Speaker fell apart soon after they were announced.

Host Bret Baier was slated to have House Majority Leader Scalise (R-La.), House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and Republican Study Committee Chairman Kevin Hern (R-Okla.) for a Monday event that Fox News billed as a “joint interview” rather than a debate.

But the unusual move — nationalizing an internal GOP conference decision — prompted backlash from GOP members, and changes to the plans

A spokesperson for Jordan first said he wanted to adjust the schedule so that the candidates talk to the GOP conference first. The conference is scheduled to host a closed-door forum Tuesday.

“Mr. Jordan is always happy to share his plan for the country, but he believes it is crucial to meet with the GOP conference before the event,” a spokesperson for the Ohio lawmaker said in a statement first shared with CNN.

Then, Hern publicly pulled out.
