I will not seek to run again for Speaker of the House. I may have lost a vote today, but I fought for what I believe in—and I believe in America. It has been an honor to serve.

I used to be very critical of McCarthy when he was Boehner's hitman, but believe that he ultimately became a decent Speaker, considering the job description and the rowdy caucus he had to manage.  With that said, I think this is a smart move, since Gaetz has now broken it, and now gets to buy and own it---lock, stock, and barrel.  I'd just sit back and enjoy the popcorn too...

All bills for the raising of revenue must originate in the House.  Spending bills can come from the Senate.  And as a practical matter, so can revenue bills.  They just take some other bill that originated in the House and amend it in the Senate to raise revenue.  So the bill technically originated in the House.

Yup. And those 30 are not going to vote for long shutdowns.  Probably won't vote for even a short one at this point, and they'd likely reject even Chip Roy's bill if it was brought up again.  They have no reason at this point to try to compromise with the hardliners any more.

But that's a reality some folks just don't want to acknowledge.  They live in a fantasy work where the majority of voters are secretly conservative and will vote out anyone who isn't as soon as they are "exposed".
