Oregon animal rights extremists are working overtime collecting signatures this summer, and beyond, to ensure Initiative Petition 3 (IP 3) is on the ballot in November 2024. IP 3 is a new version of Oregon Proposition 13 (IP 13), which failed to secure the 112,020 signatures required to be placed on the November 2022 ballot. Disguised as so-called humane treatment for animals, both initiatives reflect extremist desires to ban, or severely curtail, hunting, fishing, animal agriculture, pet ownership, and overall human interaction with animals.

In June 2023, the Oregon Hunters Association (OHA) reported the extremists behind “Yes on IP 3” received certification for ballot language, meaning they can begin their quest to collect the required 112,020 signatures by July 8, 2024, which would qualify the initiative for inclusion on the November 2024 ballot. ...

The goal of this proposition is to make it illegal to use animals for food, fiber, or simply as companions. Proven farm and ranch animal husbandry and care practices such as artificial insemination, standard training methods, and established humane animal treatment would be illegal. This would essentially make farmers, ranchers, and pet owners criminals, resulting in fines and/or imprisonment.

IP 3 will be detrimental to Oregon families, hunters, anglers, farmers, ranchers, breeders and animals.  ...

If IP 3 is placed on the November 2024 ballot, and is passed into law, rights and liberties for anyone owning an animal, using an animal, hunting or fishing, could be altered indefinitely. Non-compliance could result in criminal prosecution of pet owners, farmers, ranchers and others who have animals. The language in the ballot also includes service and companion animals.  ...

I haven't been there, but if it looks like a bit of Western Idaho, I'd wager there are lots of nooks and crannies things could fall into.

Maybe the vegans and Enviros are less than well organized, but failing to get enough signatures to put the previous version of this stupidity on the 2022 ballot suggests that it would be very likely to get buried if it made the 2023 ballot.

The measure would ban raising sheep for wool. It would also ban the very trendy alpaca wool. I wonder if it would ban beekeeping. The obvious side of beekeeping is honey production, very trendy. The other side is that beekeepers rent out their hives to certain types of farmers to pollinate their crops. If beekeeping is banned, it's not just honey production that would be affected.

A large local bee operation here in N. FL ships there bee's to Cali every year to pollinate the Almond farms.

I grew up in a farming county in CA's Central Valley. My Dad grew row crops and grain, but there are also many almond and walnut orchards in the county. Several rural towns combine to host an annual Almond Festival.

IIRC, one year my Dad raised alfalfa for seed, and he rented some hives to pollinate the alfalfa.

If passed, IP3 would remove the exemption for hunting, fishing, and trapping from our cruelty laws, meaning that any practice that involves the intentional injury of an animal would be criminalized. So what will happen to the animals at the shelters? Ship them off to other shelters in different states or are they going to put these animals down?

I can't imagine pet food companies like Hills, Purina, etc being happy with this. They will loose a lot of money if no one in this state buys pet food.

Looks like they'll be a signicant increase in animal euthanasia in Oregon's future ... so many homeless, starving, sick animals ... no pet "ownership" - no legal basis for required feeding, shelter, and medical care.

Generally,it starts out with pubic hangings,but they don't usually  last too long because  the ones that aren't hanged the  first day or two have already fled across a border and are living as refugees.
