H.L. Menkin's famous quote about democracy came to mind recently, when reading about how most Australians want less immigration:
Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard.
Australia fits a pattern of first world democracies where the common people want less immigration, but their leaders give them more of it anyway.
As Noah Carl wrote in an Aporia Magazine post this week, the common people in advanced countries have a good reason to want less immigration, because it makes them worse off. At the same time, mass immigration from poor countries to the west also harms poor countries, via brain drain. With Carl's permission, I've posted his full essay below.
